Office of Undergraduate Education – Access, Transitions & Student Success Job Title(s): Lansing Spartan Scholars Impact Team - (LSS Impact)  

Classification Title:  Student Clerical Assistant I 

Salary: $14.00 an/hour 

Hours: 15 hours a week 

Year in School: Rising Junior/Senior  

Minimum GPA Req: 2.75 

Positions Available: Three (Communications & Scheduling, Outreach & Recruitment, and Peer Mentors) 

 

Our Unit: 

The Office of Undergraduate Education at Michigan State University advances student success and works to close opportunity gaps by delivering comprehensive academic, advising, and transition support across first-year and transfer pathways. Through initiatives such as Summer Bridge programs, summer and first-year transition experiences, and cohort-based support models, the office takes a strategic, student-centered, and holistic approach to strengthening the undergraduate experience. In partnership with campus units and community stakeholders, these efforts continuously improve undergraduate programs and promote student persistence, engagement, and timely degree completion. These academic success priorities are advanced through the Office of Access, Transitions, and Student Success, which administers cohort-based programs serving students from targeted communities, including the Lansing Spartan Scholars Program (LSS) for first-year and transfer students from the Greater Lansing area and Detroit M.A.D.E., an initiative serving incoming first-year students from the Metro Detroit region.

Overview: 

The Lansing Spartan Scholars Impact Team is a selective leadership opportunity for high-performing students committed to advancing college access, scholar success, and community belonging. Impact Team Student Leaders serve as ambassadors, mentors, and program collaborators who help shape the scholar experience from recruitment through graduation. 

Students hired into the Impact Team will be placed into one of three functional leadership areas: 

  • Communications, Social Media, & Scheduling 
  • Recruitment & Outreach 
  • Peer Mentorship 

All roles contribute to the strategic priorities of LSS while building transferable professional skills in leadership, communication, and program operations. 

Communications/Social Media/Scheduling (Lead) 

Ideal for students interested in: marketing, communications, higher education administration, and project coordination. 

Preferred Qualifications   

  • Experience managing social media platforms or creating digital content. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and inclusive excellence. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Develop and schedule engaging content for LSS communication platforms, including social media and newsletters. 
  • Maintain the program’s communication calendar and assist with promotional strategies for events and initiatives. 
  • Coordinate scheduling logistics for workshops, meetings, and scholar-facing programs. 
  • Collaborate with the LSS team to highlight scholar achievements and program milestones. 
  • Ensure messaging aligns with university branding and student-centered values. 
  • Support event promotion and provide on-site communication assistance as needed. 

 

Outreach & Recruitment (Lead)  

Ideal for students interested in: admissions, public relations, community engagement, leadership. 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience managing social media platforms or creating digital content. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and inclusive excellence. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Represent LSS at recruitment events, campus visits, and community-based programs. 
  • Assist in planning and executing outreach initiatives that introduce prospective scholars to MSU resources and opportunities. 
  • Serve as a knowledgeable program ambassador, sharing personal experiences and insights with prospective students and families. 
  • Support communication campaigns that encourage application and enrollment. 
  • Collaborate with campus partners to enhance recruitment strategies. 
  • Track outreach efforts and provide feedback to strengthen future engagement. 

 

Peer Mentor (Lead) 

Ideal for students interested in: education, counseling, student affairs, social work, leadership. 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build supportive relationships. 
  • Demonstrated academic success and responsible leadership. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment. 
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment. 
  • Prior mentoring or leadership experience preferred. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide support and mentorship to the LSS Ambassadors Team 
  • Provide consistent mentorship and serve as a trusted resource for assigned scholars. 
  • Facilitate small-group check-ins and contribute to community-building initiatives. 
  • Support scholars in connecting with academic resources, campus services, and involvement opportunities. 
  • Assist with transition programming, workshops, and scholar events. 
  • Monitor scholar engagement and elevate concerns to professional staff when appropriate. 
  • Model academic excellence, professionalism, and positive leadership. 

 

LSS Impact Team Minimum Qualifications  

  • Currently enrolled Michigan State University undergraduate student entering junior or senior standing by the start of employment. 
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 at the time of application and maintained throughout employment. 
  • Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and strong organizational skills. 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations and contribute to an inclusive community. 
  • Commitment to supporting student success, engagement, and persistence. 
  • Availability to work up to 15 hours per week, including occasional evenings and weekends for programming. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when supporting peers. 

 

LSS Impact Team Preferred Qualifications  

  • Prior leadership experience in student organizations, cohort-based programs, campus employment, or community initiatives. 
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, tutoring, or supporting peers. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and foster belonging. 
  • Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving ability, and adaptability in fast-paced environments. 
  • Experience with event planning, recruitment, communications, or program coordination. 
  • Cultural humility and a demonstrated commitment to advancing access, opportunity, and student development. 
  • Comfort presenting to groups and representing a program or organization in a professional setting.
