UPPER SCHOOL COMPOSITION TEACHER at Augustine Classical Academy

FLSA Status: Exempt

OVERVIEW: The Upper School Composition Teacher (USCT) provides instruction in composition/writing courses to Logic School (middle school) and/or Rhetoric School (high school) students at Augustine Classical Academy. He/she has proven knowledge of, and experience in, written communication— and a passion for training young people in effective writing. The USCT is skilled at equipping students to improve their writing abilities and is adept at providing constructive feedback on students’ written work.

He/she understands grade-appropriate writing outcomes and instructs students in order to provide a well-rounded, comprehensive, classical education rooted in a biblical worldview. The USCT guides students in cultivating intellectual and personal habits upon which responsible, independent, and productive lives are built. He/she accomplishes this through the creation of lesson plans, inspiration,positive feedback, and constructive critique with the goal of promoting intellectual curiosity and Christian formation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Classroom Instruction and Management

● Teach 4 to 5 Upper School writing and/or elective courses in the areas of composition, rhetoric, and/or senior thesis

● Maintain up-to-date lesson plans

● Maintain a joyful, clean and orderly classroom at all times

● Grade and return all student work within one week of its original submission

● Participate in non-academic duties as assigned by the Director of the Upper School (e.g., morning drop-off, afternoon pick-up, lunch monitoring, recess monitoring)

● Participate in regular (monthly, unless otherwise specified) teacher-curriculum meetings

● Provide grade-specific feedback to ACA administration

● Partnership with Parents

● Participate in parent-related special events throughout the year (e.g., Exordium, Speech Meet, Christmas Concert)

● Maintain regular communication with parents through weekly updates, progress reports, parent-teacher conferences, and informal interactions

● Respond to parent communications in a timely manner

● Resolve any parental concerns

● Learn parent names and greet parents personally as opportunity presents

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

● Bachelor’s degree (minimum); Relevant graduate-level work preferred

● Ability to commit to ACA's mission, statement of faith, and employee standards of conduct

● Classroom teaching experience (one year minimum)

● Familiarity with Classical Christian education (preferred) and willingness to be trained in classical Christian educational model

● Excellent oral and written communication skills

● Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

● Ability to work well with students, staff, and parents

SALARY AND BENEFITS

● $45,450-$65,000 annual salary depending on experience and qualifications

● PTO: four full days per year (in addition to days the school is closed)

● Sick Leave: six full days per year

● Partially sponsored health, dental and vision insurance plans (60% for full-time employees & 50% for dependents; 50% for part-time employees working 20+ hours/week)

● Life insurance: $25,000

● Reduced ACA tuition for dependents (10% for part-time; 20% for full-time)
