Job Summary:
The Corvallis Farm Unit is seeking an Assistant Farm Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The purpose of this position is to perform and coordinate field operations for the research efforts at the OSU Corvallis Farm Unit Primarily the Hyslop research farm, under the direction of the Hyslop farm manager they will sometimes be asked to report to other locations and aid other farm managers. Primary responsibilities are to perform the preparation and maintenance aspects of field research projects including seed bed preparation, planting, nutrient application, irrigation, cover crop production and routine pest management. Other duties include maintaining the equipment maintenance program for the Hyslop farm. This position may supervise a classified technician, temporary, seasonal, and/or student employees in the general issues related to those positions.

Key Responsibilities
50% Provide cultivation activities associated with research plots for wheat, barley, seed and other crops at the Hyslop Farm. Provide orientation, technical advice, and consultation to farm users on cultivation practices and farm policies and procedures. Communicate pesticide safety concerns and general safety practices to farm users. Participate in soil testing, land preparation, lime application, planting, pesticide application, rodent control, irrigation, and harvest of crops to provide precise and uniform field research conditions. Utilize proper cover crop management techniques for good soil health, uniformity and weed control in farm ground. Work with the Hyslop Farm manager and research project leaders to design the best set of management practices, based on experience in working individual farm fields and soils, to achieve desired research project goals. Offer advice and consultation where individuals are infrequent farm users. Keep accurate records of all field operations, including implements used and materials (cover crops, pesticides, soil amendments) applied. Participate in the transportation of equipment from the Hyslop Farm to the satellite farms and to other off-station research sites, as requested.
25% Manage the equipment and its maintenance at the Hyslop Farm under the direction of the Hyslop Farm Manager. Keep record of annual oil changes, regular grease, inspections and other routine maintenance on all implements and tractors at the Hyslop farm. Complete reasonable repairs to implements or tractors and work with the Hyslop Farm Manager to determine when an outside service or dealer service needs to be called for. Provide mechanical support to the farm users under the supervision of the Hyslop Farm manager.
15% When requested offer these same services at any of the other Corvallis Farm Unit sites. Provide support to the other Corvallis Farm Unit Managers for field prep, pesticide applications and mechanical repairs. Cover for other Corvallis Farm Unit Managers in short term leaves of absence or vacations.
5% Provide leadership, supervision, and direction for any assigned staff. Assist manager with the farm safety programs. Participate and assist in the maintenance and repairs to machinery and facilities. Procure supplies, materials, and equipment for projects when directed and observe both state and federal policies and procedures.
5% Professional development and university service. Includes attending educational short-courses and seminars to maintain current eligibility for pesticide license and as a public water system operator.
What You Will Need
BS in Agriculture or Natural Sciences with one year applicable experience or three years' applicable experience in horticulture, crop and farm operations or related field. 1 year of the experience should be mechanically based, can be accumulative such as off seasons being spent in the shop performing maintenance and or repairs.
Active Oregon Public Pesticide Applicator's License or ability to obtain license within three months of hire.
Experience with farm equipment operation and maintenance with the ability to operate a variety of heavy farm equipment, power tools and ladders.
Experience with irrigation systems including operation and maintenance of various systems.
Must be willing to work in areas where pesticides are present, including specialty operations area in Ag chemical application (pesticide, herbicide).
Must be able to lift to 50 lbs.
Computer literacy specifically Microsoft Office Suite.
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
A demonstrable history of working with people from diverse backgrounds including others to make decisions working together to achieve common goals.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
Research plot management practice knowledge.
Experience with farm equipment operation and maintenance.
Experience with irrigation systems including operation and maintenance of various systems.
Mechanical education or trade school.
Safety Experience.
General farm facility maintenance knowledge and experience.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Farm Operations occur throughout the year. All weather conditions. Some weekend or night work necessary as issues arise.
