Council and Executive Operations Intern

The City of Reno offers a paid internship within the City Manager’s Office, supporting the Council & Executive Operations function. This internship provides students and emerging professionals a practical introduction to local government and the opportunity to contribute to high-visibility work that supports City Council operations, the City Manager’s executive office, neighborhood engagement, and Council-directed priorities.

Interns will gain hands-on experience in executive operations, governance support, public communication, and community engagement while building professional skills in research, writing, customer service, and problem-solving. Selected candidates may also enroll in a for-credit internship course through an accredited university or college. This internship aligns with University of Nevada guidelines, where interns may receive 1 academic credit for every 40 hours worked (typically 3 credits per semester for approximately 120 hours).

Interns generally work approximately 10- 15 hours per week. Evening and occasional weekend availability is required to support public meetings and community events. Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) meetings are typically held in the evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Interns must be able to travel to offsite NAB meeting locations throughout the community.

 

Examples of Essential Functions

Interns work alongside the Council & Executive Operations team and support a range of executive and governance functions, including:

  • Support City Council and NAB meeting operations, including preparation,logistics, check-in and welcoming attendees, andassistingstaff with smooth public participation and public comment processes.
  • Assist with executive operations in the City Manager’s Office, including coordination support for time-sensitive meetings, briefings, and executive commitments tied to Council activities and priority initiatives.
  • Help prepare and quality-check Council-facing materials such as briefings, memos, fact sheets, presentations, and meeting packets, including proofreading for clarity, consistency, and readiness.
  • Conduct research on community issues, Council initiatives, and best practices in local government; summarize findings in clear, usable formats for staff and leadership.
  • Support constituent service and issue tracking by helping intake public inquiries, routing requests to theappropriate department, tracking status updates, and supporting follow-through.
  • Assist with communication and outreach efforts, including drafting and formatting content, supporting newsletters and updates, and helping ensuretimelyand professional responses to residents.
  • Assist with organizing and managing records and documents, including maintaining shared drives, supporting version control, and helping ensure materials are clear, consistent, and readily available.
  • Contribute to special projects that promote transparency, improve internal coordination, and strengthen the City’s ability to executepriorities effectively.

 

Minimum Qualifications

We recognize that interns bring a wide range of educational and professional experiences and welcome applicants from both academic and non-academic paths.

  • Enrollment in upper-division coursework at an accredited college or university is desirable, but not required; applicants with other relevant experience are encouraged to apply
  • Strong interpersonal skills and clear, professional writing ability
  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong customer service skills, including professional communication and phone etiquette
  • Interest in local government and community needs (examples include public administration, planning, finance, communications, technology systems, public policy, or civic engagement)
  • Bilingual Spanish-English is highly preferred
  • Possession of a valid and active driver’s license is required
