MOW Engineering - Communication Systems Engineering/ Emerging Talent Intern (Summer)

Department: Department of Subways 

Location: 2 Broadway, New York, NY 10004 

Position Title: MOW Engineering - Communication Systems Engineering/ Emerging Talent Intern 

Hourly Rate: $19.00 (Undergraduate), $21.00 (Graduate) 

  

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location. 

  

OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT: 

The Communications & Systems Engineering Division (C&SE) is responsible for Communication and System engineering designs, technical oversight, and lifecycle support of telecommunications systems for the Department of Subways. C&SE provides design review, standards development, requirements definition, technical record keeping, and troubleshooting of all NYCT communication systems, including CCTV, public address systems, fire alarm systems, WAN and LAN networks, fiber optic infrastructure, telephone and intercom systems, radio and security systems, UPS backup power systems, data centers, and communications rooms. The division provides expert-level technical analysis and problem resolution, ensures effective configuration and asset management, and maintains accurate system documentation to ensure all systems are safe, efficient, maintainable, and reliable. 

  

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Assist engineers with reviewing design submittals, shop drawings, and technical documentation for NYCT communications systems. 

Support development and editing of contract specifications, scope language, and technical requirements. 

Help prepare, organize, and maintain testing plans/procedures and support analysis of test results (e.g., functional testing, acceptance testing). 

Collect, clean, and analyze data using Excel (and other tools as applicable) to support engineering decisions and reporting. 

Perform product and technology research (e.g., vendor cut sheets, standards comparisons, lifecycle considerations) and summarize findings. 

Assist with updating and organizing technical records, including system documentation, configuration/asset information, and engineering reference files. 

Support field surveys/site walks as needed to validate existing conditions in communications rooms, stations, or facilities (photologs, counts, notes). 

Learn and apply NYCT Standards, Design Guidelines, Policies, and Procedures, and help identify/document gaps or improvement opportunities. 

  

PROJECTS: 

Communications Room / System Documentation Improvement Package: Review a selected set of communications rooms or systems and produce an organized documentation packet (inventory list, photo log, key drawings/reference files list, and documentation gaps). 

Standards & Design Guidelines Crosswalk Update: Create or update a cross-reference matrix aligning applicable NYCT standards/guidelines to common communications system types (e.g., CCTV, PA/CIS, WAN/LAN, fiber, radio), including key requirements and references. 

Test Results Summary & Tracking Tool: Develop an Excel-based tracker and summary template for test procedures and results (e.g., checklist status, pass/fail trends, open items log) to support engineering review and closeout. 

  

  

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Coursework or demonstrated interest in one or more of the following is a plus: networks (LAN/WAN), fiber optics, radio systems, cybersecurity fundamentals, systems integration, or CAD/technical documentation. 

The candidate will work alongside experienced engineers and gain exposure to NYCT communications infrastructure across design review, standards, and lifecycle support activities. 

The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills.  

The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively. 

The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work professionally as work may include a mix of office and field/site activities depending on project needs. 

The candidate may be asked to provide a brief summary presentation or final deliverable package highlighting work performed and recommendations. 

  

  

REQUIRED EDUCATION: 

Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA 

Major(s) Preferred: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications / Network Engineering, Systems Engineering, Information Technology / Information Systems, Cybersecurity (with interest in networks/critical infrastructure), or related engineering/technical disciplines with interest in communications systems or related field.
