Overview
Founded in 1998, Friends of the Winooski River (FWR) is a nonprofit organization based in Montpelier, Vermont dedicated to the restoration and protection of the Winooski River and its watershed. We pursue this mission through monitoring, restoration, partnerships, education, and outreach.
Friends of the Winooski River is seeking a summer intern to support our residential consultation programs. Our team provides free site visits through our Stream Wise and Storm Smart programs to help landowners learn to manage their riparian buffer areas and stormwater runoff on their properties. The intern will join project managers on site visits, and assist with creating reports for the landowners that recommend best management practices.
Responsibilities
Primary activities include:
- Participate in training sessions for Stream Wise and Storm Smart protocols
- Support FWR staff in conducting 1-2 property consultations per week
- Use Survey123 for data collection on sites
- Assist with preparation of a report for the landowner after each property consultation
As time, interest, and budget allow, additional activities could include:
- Conduct culvert surveys to evaluate functionality
- Participate in dragonfly monitoring in predetermined locations across watershed
- Assist with public outreach and the development of educational materials
- Assist with our water quality monitoring program
Qualifications
- Coursework in environmental science, natural resources, or related discipline
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
- Ability to work independently while remote
- Reliable transportation to and from site visits and fieldwork
- Adaptability in a dynamic work environment
- Professional demeanor when engaging with partners and stakeholders
Position Details
Duration: May 25, 2026, to Aug 7, 2026 (flexible based on selected candidate)
Schedule: Part-time (20 hours/week), 10 weeks
Compensation: $22/hour
Reports to: Taylor Litwin, Project Manager and Michele Braun, Executive Director
Location: This is a hybrid position with some tasks (i.e. property consultations, fieldwork, etc.) occurring within the Winooski River watershed and others can be completed remotely. The FWR office in Montpelier will have a workspace for selected intern.
