Position Overview

This is a per diem, non exempt, hourly instructional position. Standard hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with required student availability from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., as assigned. Workdays are scheduled based on school needs.

Per Diem Substitute Teachers report directly to the Head of School.

Compensation is provided on a per diem, hourly basis in accordance with OptimaEd policies.

Major Function

Per Diem Substitute Teachers serve as instructional leaders responsible for maintaining continuity of learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substitute teachers implement provided lesson plans, facilitate student engagement, support immersive learning experiences when applicable, and maintain a safe, respectful, and academically focused learning environment.

Instruction may include synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences designed to meet diverse learning needs.

Position Summary

Per Diem Substitute Teachers deliver standards aligned instruction using OptimaEd approved curriculum and resources as directed. They ensure students remain engaged in meaningful academic work while upholding the school’s commitment to classical education, character formation, and immersive learning.

Substitute teachers are expected to use instructional technology appropriately, maintain classroom structure, and support students’ intellectual and moral development.

Instructional Expectations

  • Implement teacher provided lesson plans and instructional materials
  • Facilitate student engagement during immersive or technology enhanced lessons,
  • including VR experiences when scheduled
  • Balance direct instruction, discussion, collaboration, and independent work
  • Ensure learning objectives for the day are met

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Deliver assigned lessons aligned to grade level standards
  • Maintain instructional pacing and academic expectations
  • Support differentiated instruction as outlined in lesson plans
  • Promote critical thinking, inquiry, and student participation

Student Support and Classroom Management

  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and structured learning environment
  • Establish clear behavioral expectations and reinforce school policies
  • Address student misconduct promptly and appropriately
  • Support diverse learners and follow accommodations as directed

Technology and Systems Use

  • Utilize instructional technology platforms as required, including LMS, VR tools, and digital assessment systems
  • Maintain accurate attendance and required records for the day
  • Ensure responsible and appropriate student use of technology

Collaboration and Communication

  • Communicate effectively with school leadership and staff regarding classroom updates
  • Document student progress or concerns for the returning teacher
  • Interact professionally with students, families, and colleagues
  • Uphold and model the school’s mission, vision, and values

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma from an accredited institution
  • Ability to manage a classroom and maintain instructional continuity
  • Strong communication and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting
  • Experience in online, blended, or technology rich environments
  • Willingness to support immersive and virtual learning experiences

  • Ability to follow established lesson plans and procedures
  • Ability to maintain focus and manage multiple student needs
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional judgment
  • Ability to adapt to changing classroom needs and schedules

Cognitive and Mental Requirements

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students and staff
  • Ability to use computers and instructional technology for extended periods
  • Ability to maintain attention, exercise sound judgment, and manage a classroom environment effectively
  • Ability to learn and apply school procedures and expectations

Work Environment

  • Extended screen time and use of immersive technology may be required
  • Ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods
