Freelance Computing Writer

Are you a Computer Science or Engineering student who loves diving into tech?

XDA is looking for technically minded students to join our team as freelance Computing writers covering all things related to smart home, streaming, software, networking, and PC hardware.

No formal writing background? That’s okay. We’re looking for strong technical thinkers who we can coach into great writers.

This is a remote, flexible opportunity ideal for students looking to build a portfolio, gain media experience, and get paid to write about the tech they already enjoy.

What You’ll Do

  • Write articles on topics like smart home devices, streaming platforms, Windows/Linux, PC hardware, and networking
  • Break down technical concepts into clear, practical explanations
  • Pitch story ideas based on trends and personal expertise
  • Collaborate with editors for feedback and development
  • Learn how professional tech publishing works

What We’re Looking For

  • Current or recent student in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or related field (preferred but not required)
  • Strong understanding of at least one of the following:
  • Smart home ecosystems (Home Assistant, Matter, Zigbee, etc.)
  • Streaming platforms and hardware
  • Windows/Linux systems
  • PC hardware or networking
  • Clear written communication skills
  • Self-starter attitude and ability to meet deadlines

Compensation

  • Freelance (1099 contractor role)
  • Paid per article (rates based on assignment type and experience)
  • Flexible workload
