About the Department

The Executive Department provides strategic leadership for NYRR by working closely with the Board of Directors and Senior Leaders across the organization to establish long-range goals, strategies, plans, and policies to effectively lead the organization. The Executive Office serves as a central hub that coordinates the functions of all associated departments of the organization, while also focusing on strengthening our workplace culture, prioritizing, and allocating capital, unifying the organization, and promoting our mission of building healthier lives and stronger communities through the transformative power of running. 

About the Internship

The New York Road Runners Internship program is a paid, 21-week experience in which interns have the opportunity to learn from the best in the non-profit business. Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.

Internship dates will be Monday, June 15, 2026 to Friday, November 13, 2026.

The Executive Office intern will play a pivotal role in the planning and execution of a variety of special projects and initiatives for the department leading into the 50th anniversary celebration of the five-borough NYC marathon in 2026. The individual will have the opportunity to work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and interface with external constituents. They will also have the opportunity to work closely with the Chief of Staff to build frameworks and formulate business cases for new initiatives and pilot programs for the organization.   

Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties): 

  • Management of NYRR’s Beyond the Finish Line program – including working with existing partners to build a robust program of experiences for 2026 TCS New York City Marathon runners and creating new offerings with prospective partners. The intern will also be responsible for preparing recap reports summarizing key metrics, wins and takeaways to share with internal stakeholders, leadership and partners.   
  • Oversee the management and execution of the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon ‘Marathon Legends’ program in partnership with the Executive Assistant to the CEO. This will include administrative oversight of all travel, lodging and hospitality related activities and working with internal stakeholders to create exciting programming opportunities for marathon runners, supporters and fans. 
  • New initiatives, special projects and innovation – assist the Chief of Staff in the development of business cases and frameworks for new initiatives and pilot programs the organization is considering for implementation. This will include preparing market landscapes, conduct research and preparing SWOTs to inform the formulation of program goals, objectives and target KPIs. 
  • Exec Office Planning calendar - partner with Exec Office members to maintain year-round planning calendar, highlighting key dates for internal and external groups, including AWMM events and processes

Internship Hours: 

  • Interns will work 25 hours per week Monday through Friday.
  • Interns are required to work the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1st, as well two other weekend events (dates to be determined).
  • Other weekend event-based work may be required and will be evaluated as needed based on position.

Internship Requirements: 

  • Sophomore or junior in college, working towards a degree in business administration, strategy, sports management, marketing or a related field 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to be outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts

Salary: $22/hour
