  • Desire to be a leader amongst peers
  • Willing to work as a team member who is comfortable tackling basic office management tasks as well as contributing to intellectual conversations and work centered on government and legislation.

Applicants should be comfortable working in the office of an elected official who belongs to the Democratic Party. Applicants will not be asked what their party affiliation is during the application process. We are open to applicants from all majors and actively encourage applications from women, minorities, and persons who identify with groups that are often underrepresented in electoral politics.

Duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Drafting constituent response emails and letters
  • Preparing briefings on issues and constituent contact for the Senator
  • Attending staff meetings

  • Engaging with constituents through canvassing
  • Social media content creation
  • Event planning
  • Legislative/Policy research

The main base of operations and daily work is at Senator Ellman’s Naperville office at 24W500 Maple Avenue in Naperville. However, travel to local meetings and events may be required. Applicants are NOT required to have a car as long as they have consistent and reliable transportation to the Naperville office.

We anticipate the internship will run from mid/late May through mid August, but we are flexible on the exact start and end dates, based on the successful applicant’s school schedule.

The Senator’s office operates during a wide variety of hours, including nights and weekends, in order to accomodate the Senator’s schedule and the schedules of our constituents. It is imperative that interns have some availability on nights and weekends in addition to weekday availability. A weekly schedule will be published in advance and will take into consideration interns’ availability.
