Spring/Summer 2026 Internship

S.A.F.E. Place Position Description

TITLE: Children’s Program Intern

PAY RANGE: For academic credit only - Non-paid internship

STATUS: Temporary, Non-Exempt, Hourly, Part-time (15-24 hours per week)

HOURS OF WORK: Need from 2-8 pm M-F; anytime on weekends. Flexible schedule based on agency need including some evenings & weekend.

SUPERVISOR: Children’s Advocate/Shelter Manager

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: N/A

POSITION OVERVIEW

Children’s Program Interns major responsibilities include program planning, child-care, and crisis intervention for dependent children of clients in the shelter, and their mothers as it relates to parenting issues. The advocate interns also ensure client needs are met in a timely, ethical, and appropriate manner with the highest of quality.

KEY DUTIES

• Participates in the children’s program in conjunction with the shelter schedule. 

• Children’s program activities include, but are not limited to: open playroom, in-shelter activities and parties, tutoring, holiday celebrations, etc.

• Coordinates and facilitates parent and child events.

• Ensures care of Children’s Program resources by ensuring the sorting, maintaining, and sanitizing of all toys. Sorts and stores donations and supplies for the Children’s Program appropriately.

• Positive role modeling and building relationships that empower children.

• All other duties as assigned by Executive Director or designee

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

• Enrollment in an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree program with a focus on human services or social work preferred

• Proficient with Microsoft Office and ability to learn agency database

• Ability to work as a team, adaptability, flexibility, and dependability 

• Understanding and/or ability to learn domestic violence dynamics, investment in the empowerment philosophy, organizational skills, crisis intervention skills, and an ability to access community resources

MINIMUM LEARNING OUTCOMES 

• Basic understand of safety issues related to children.

• Learn to plan and implement children’s recreational programs.

• Assess client needs and adjust programs and offerings to offer resources that are the best fit for individual clients.

• Victim Service Provider Training provided and completed as applicable (up to 40 hours total)
