Position Summary
The Zero Waste Event Planning Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the planning and execution of the Microbrew Review event put on by Seven Generations Ahead, with opportunities to assist with other events, specifically focusing on achieving and promoting zero-waste initiatives. This position is ideal for a highly motivated individual passionate about sustainability, waste reduction, and gaining hands-on experience in event coordination and environmental advocacy. The intern will work closely with the Events and Sustainability teams to integrate best practices for minimizing waste across all event aspects, from vendor selection to post-event clean-up.
Key Responsibilities
Event Planning & Coordination
- Assist in the logistical planning and execution of events.
- Coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and caterers to ensure compliance with zero-waste policies (e.g., using reusable dishware, composting organic waste, minimizing packaging).
- Develop and manage timelines, checklists, and resource allocation specific to zero-waste implementation for each event.
- Support on-site event setup, management, and tear-down, ensuring efficient and effective waste sorting stations are implemented and monitored.
Zero Waste Implementation & Education
- Assist in training event volunteers on zero-waste procedures and provide on-site guidance to ensure correct waste management throughout the event duration.
- Assist in training restaurants on the zero waste aspect of the event including using compostable materials
Outreach & Communication
- Assist in communicating zero-waste goals and requirements to event staff, vendors, and attendees
- Contribute to post-event debriefs and documentation, focusing on lessons learned and best practices for sustainable event management.
Qualifications
Required
- Strong passion for sustainability, environmental issues, and zero-waste principles.
- Demonstrated interest in or experience with event planning, coordination, or logistics (even at a small scale).
- Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
- Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks independently and meet deadlines.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be based in Oak Park or very local (e.g., neighboring suburbs) and have reliable access to a car for transporting materials to and from event sites.
Preferred
- Experience volunteering or working at zero-waste focused events.
- Familiarity with recycling and composting infrastructure is a plus.
- Proficiency in basic office software (Google Workspace or Microsoft Office).
