Student Podcast Production Assistant | Science Communications Program

The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University is dedicated to inspiring research, leadership, and innovation that ensures clean, abundant water for the environment and all humanity. The Meadows Center fulfills its mission by integrating activities across four pillars of action in powerful ways. Our work in each of these pillars begins at Spring Lake – one of the largest artesian springs in the world – and ripples outward across Texas and beyond.

 

The Meadows Center is seeking a work-study eligible student to support the Science Communications team in coordinating and promoting the Center’s podcast. This position is designed as a learning opportunity for students interested in podcast production, digital media, and environmental storytelling. Students gain hands-on experience in audio production, episode coordination, and promotional strategy within a supportive, collaborative team environment.

 

General Description

Responsible for assisting the Digital Media Specialist and Science Communications Manager with all aspects of the podcast production process, including coordination, production, and promotion. This position will work on the second floor of Spring Lake Hall.

 

Schedule

Applicants must be available during the times of 8:00 am -5:00 pm Mon – Fri, with a minimum of 3-hour blocks per scheduled shift. Morning or afternoon shifts are preferred. Employees are required to work between 5-10 hours per week.

 

Job Requirements 

  • Must be able to work 5-10 hrs/week
  • Must have experience working in an office setting
  • Must have great customer service skills, be self-motivated, and have a willingness to learn
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Audition, Spotify for Creators, BuzzSprout, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with MailChimp and Canva preferred.
  • Must have a reliable method of getting to work. A Texas State Parking Pass is required if you plan to drive to work
  • Must provide a resume, school schedule, and portfolio (if available — class projects are welcome). 

 

Job Duties

  • Assist in coordinating podcast episode schedules and guest communications
  • Conduct background research on episode topics and potential guests
  • Support audio editing and basic sound mixing (training provided if needed)
  • Draft episode descriptions, show notes, and promotional copy
  • Upload and publish episodes to podcast platforms
  • Track listener analytics and prepare brief performance summaries
  • Coordinate with the Communications team on cross-promotion via email and social media
  • Maintain organized digital files and production timelines
  • Learn about Spring Lake and The Meadows Center’s educational goals
  • All other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree or coursework in Digital Media, Radio, Television, and Film, or a related field
  • Familiarity with basic audio editing, production, and tools (e.g., audio recording equipment and standard outputs, podcast hosting sites, and Adobe Audition)
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Passion for environmental issues is a plus!

 

Preferred Academic Background

  • Junior or Senior student (Bachelor’s) or Graduate student in Digital Media, Radio, Television, and Film, or related field
  • Completion of (or current enrollment in) at least one course in web design, HTML/CSS, UX/UI, or related coursework
  • Graphic design experience is a plus.

 

Location

Students driving their vehicles to work must have a Texas State parking permit. Students without a vehicle must have a reliable method of getting to work. Students may utilize the Bobcat Shuttle Route 23 - Post Road. The bus stop is located at the main entrance of The Meadows Center. 

 

Employee Evaluation Process

Employees will be evaluated on their work output and ethics. Employees will be required to attend all scheduled shifts unless prior communication has been made with their direct supervisor. All employees are required to follow the university's policies and procedures.

 

Pay Rate Determination 

The pay rate for this position begins at $11. Experience and amount result in a higher rate if deemed appropriate by the Science Communications Program. 

 

Direct Supervisor 

The Digital Media Specialist for the Science Communications team directly supervises this position.
