City Attorney

The City of Oshkosh, WI seeks an experienced municipal legal professional to serve as City Attorney. This position is the chief legal advisor and a strategic, trusted, and apolitical member of the executive leadership team. The ideal candidate will provide timely, practical, and option-based legal counsel in a fast-paced public-sector environment, balancing legal risk with operational needs, community priorities, and organizational progress. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong judgment, professionalism, and discretion; communicate complex legal issues clearly and confidently; and effectively support elected officials, leadership, staff, boards, and commissions. They will be an effective leader and mentor, capable of overseeing Legal Department operations, fostering collaboration, and promoting innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement. A commitment to ethical, unbiased counsel, proactive legal problem avoidance, and public service is essential, along with dedication to advancing the City of Oshkosh’s mission, vision, and long-term strategic goals. 

Expected Hiring Range: $135,000-$155,000 (DOQ)

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible municipal legal experience or 6–9 years municipal law with significant leadership experience. 
  • Admission to the Wisconsin State Bar and maintenance of an active license in good standing throughout employment. 
  • 3–5 years of supervisory experience. 
  • Valid Driver’s License. 
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and/or advanced proficiency with software and technology supporting efficient legal operations.
