Conservation District Summer Intern

Washington County Conservation District 

 

 

The Washington County Conservation District (WCCD) has an opening for one part-time (24 hours/week) summer intern to work in our office.  This position will be available starting in mid-May and end in mid-August (dates flexible based on school schedule).

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Provide technical, administrative, informational, and organizational assistance that will improve the WCCD and the quality of the Commonwealth’s water and soil resources.  The focus of this work relates to department specific tasks, technical assistance, and the creation, implementation, and coordination of workplans and strategies to improve and protect the county’s soil and water.  The WCCD Intern is a resource to both the public and nonprofit sectors and is under the direct supervision of the Conservation District Manager and the Department Leads (Nonpoint Source Pollution and Permitting).

 

GENERAL DISTRICT ACTIVITIES:

 

  1. Prepare articles for newsletters, social media posting, marketing materials, and program summaries as requested. 
  2. Plan and film videos highlighting the work of WCCD.
  3. Conduct fieldwork and site inspections with qualified staff.
  4. Coordinate and collect data from field sites as part of current research projects.
  5. Assist with outreach and educational events as needed.
  6. Prepare written monthly report of activities completed to the Board of Directors.
  7. Attend staff and other meetings as requested. 
  8. Perform other duties as requested by the District Manager or Department Lead.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  1. Currently seeking a Bachelor’s Degree or studies in Agriculture, Biology, Environmental Resource Management, Geoenvironmental Studies, Hydrology, Communications, Marketing, or related field required or equivalent experience.
  2. An ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a wide range of individuals and groups.
  3. Ability to traverse difficult terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
  4. Ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to self-motivate.
  5. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for use during work hours.
  6. Some irregular work hours: including evening and weekend work, may occur.
  7. Selected candidate will be required to obtain background check and child abuse clearance.

 

COMPENSATION – The position is part time, up to 24 hours/week, and will be compensated at $15/hour for the duration of the internship.  Travel required during the internship will be compensated at the state rate.
