Position Summary:
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Solar Energy Intern for the Office of Sustainability at Oregon State University (OSU).
The OSU Sustainability Office seeks a student intern to support upgrades to and deployment of the https://sustainability.oregonstate.edu/energy/renewable-energy#solar_trailer and to assist with other energy related projects. The Sustainability Office is part of Capital Planning and Resources, the department responsible for planning and developing OSU's physical infrastructure.
Upgrading, maintaining and operating the Solar Trailer is a primary function of this position. The successful candidate will lead efforts to modernize and maintain safe and effective operation of the 5,000 lb. Trailer, working with the OSU Sustainability Officer to expand student responsibilities for this revenue-generating asset. Other duties include assisting with meter reading and monitoring renewable energy systems.During fall and winter quarters, primary tasks include regular maintenance and monitoring of Solar Trailer systems and periodic upgrade projects. Anticipated fall/winter weekly workload may range from 3-5 hours per week with high flexibility to meet the candidate's scheduling needs. During late spring and summer quarters, primary tasks include transportation and operation of the Trailer at events. In person availability is required for most, but not all, of summer. Anticipated late spring/summer weekly workload may range from 5-20 hours per week with a focus on meeting customer demand.

Position Duties:
• Provide regular monitoring and perform basic maintenance on the OSU Solar Trailer.
• Generate creative and innovative solutions to refine mechanical, electrical and logistical aspects of the Trailer.
• Serve as primary contact for students in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and related disciplines as they design and implement changes to the Trailer as senior capstones and other student projects, using the Trailer as an experiential learning opportunity.
• Respond to customer reservation requests and manage the Solar Trailer's schedule.
• Safely transport and set up the Trailer at OSU and customer events throughout the State. At events, work with other exhibitors and attendees to meet electrical and logistical needs of the event, and answer questions about the Trailer and its operation.
• Track performance of and physically upkeep OSU's solar arrays.
• As needed, read utility meters once per month as part of OSU's utility billing and energy conservation efforts (involves walking and driving throughout the Corvallis campus, entering mechanical and electrical rooms, and going up and down multiple flights of stairs).
• Join Sustainability Office colleagues for various outreach events and projects.

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
• High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
• Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
• Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
• Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
• Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Additional Required Qualifications:
• Basic familiarity with mechanical systems at the consumer automotive scale (passenger vehicle or larger).
• Basic familiarity with 120 V and 240 V electrical systems (at the residential household scale).
• Experience towing trailers or demonstrated ability to learn this skill, including a valid driver's license.
• In person (Corvallis campus) availability during most, but not all, of summer. In person availability during portions of fall, winter and spring quarters.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications:
• Experience with sustainability, utilities & energy related technologies
• Intermediate or advanced experience with mechanical and/or electrical systems
• Experience communicating technical concepts to a general audience.
