Internship Title: Pediatric Medical and Research Intern

Internship and Organization Description:
We at Pediatric Associates of Charlottesville are a large pediatric private practice serving the Charlottesville region for the past 50 years. We take care of children from birth to the college years and help manage any medical or psychological issues that may arise during that time. We consider ourselves a comprehensive patient-centered medical home and offer a multitude of services including specialty newborn care, lactation, mental health counseling services, urgent care services such as laceration and simple injury management, research opportunities, and adolescent medicine services.
We are looking for someone to fill a new medical intern position designed to augment our current patient care practices as well as to introduce someone aspiring to medicine or public health to the practice of pediatric medicine. This is a unique position that is designed to be an intensive outpatient pediatric experience and provide medical skills and direct mentoring from the physicians of our practice. The position will entail opportunities for practice quality improvement, interactions with clinical research, and is designed to be flexible and directed to the interests of the intern. We anticipate this new position to be a potential stepping stone for those interested in a career in medicine and give them skills and insight that will be invaluable to their future career prospects.
Duties:
- Help to coordinate patient care including rooming of patients, vitals, and simple history taking and scribing.
- Participate in lab duties including point-of-care testing during patient encounters.
- Complete specific practice quality improvement projects to be outlined throughout the internship.
- Communicate directly with patients and their families to help coordinate future care.
- Work directly with practice physicians, providers and staff to help improve patient care and flow.
Qualifications:
- Self-driven and enthusiastic to learn about medicine in a private practice setting
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to be flexible and take on a variety of different projects
- Personal transportation will be needed.
For this internship, what level of experience is needed?
- No prior clinical experience required; training will be provided
Internship Learning Objectives:
- Understand and appreciate the dynamics and of the patient-provider relationship and further identify potential improvements in this relationship.
- Learn basic and potentially more advanced patient care skills including simple procedures.
- Present a quality improvement or research project to the practice with the goal of identifying personal interests for a future healthcare career.

Schedule:
All hours must be completed within the traditional work week (M-F; 8am-5pm). Specific hours can be mutually determined by student and supervisor. Occasional urgent care hours 5-9 pm weekdays, 9-1 pm weekends (times will be flexible).
