Job Summary:

 

The Office of Dean of Students (ODOS ) and Office of Advocacy (OA) are seeking an Assistant Director of Student Advocacy. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

 

The Assistant Director of Student Advocacy supports the mission of the Office of Dean of Students (ODOS ) and Office of Advocacy (OA) to reduce barriers to student success by providing advocacy, guidance, and support to students navigating complex institutional processes and challenges. This position provides direct support through individualized consultation, case management, and coordinated efforts to help students understand individual student rights and university policies and procedures, navigate institutional resources, and develop the skills and confidence to make informed decisions.

 

The Assistant Director contributes to larger educational and developmental priorities by collaborating with departments across the university to address systemic barriers impeding student success. This includes identifying trends in student concerns, participating in policy and process review, and supporting outreach, training, and prevention initiatives that promote awareness of student rights, responsibilities, and available support services.

 

In addition to direct student support, the Assistant Director plays a key role in managing the day-to-day operations of the Office of Advocacy. This includes monitoring office workflows, coordinating intake and case management processes, maintaining documentation and data tracking practices, and assisting with assessment, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts. The Assistant Director helps ensure advocacy services are delivered consistently, equitably, and in alignment with institutional policies and best practices.

 

The Assistant Director supervises and supports student peer advocates, providing training, coaching, and ongoing development to ensure student-centered advocacy support. This role includes recruiting, hiring, and onboarding peer advocates, facilitating regular supervision and feedback, supporting skill development related to advocacy, boundaries, confidentiality, and referral practices, and fostering a learning environment that aligns with the educational mission of the university.

Key Responsibilities

 

Advocacy, Case Management, and Student Support (45%) Provide advocacy support to students navigating academic, personal, financial, and institutional barriers to success. Manage a caseload of complex student situations using a holistic, student-centered, and trauma-informed approach. Assist students in understanding university policies, procedures, and options; support informed decision-making; and empower students to self-advocate. Coordinate with campus and community partners to connect students to resources, facilitate communication, and support resolution of concerns. Maintain accurate and timely case documentation in accordance with institutional policies and Office of Advocacy procedures.

 

Supervision and Development of Student Peer Advocates (25%) Supervise, train, and mentor student peer advocates to ensure high-quality and effective advocacy support. Recruit, onboard, and support peer advocates through regular supervision, performance feedback, and ongoing skill development. Provide education on advocacy practices, boundaries, confidentiality, referrals, and institutional policies. Foster a learning-focused supervision environment that supports student development, accountability, and alignment with the educational mission of the university.

 

Office Operations and Program Management (15%) Support the daily operations of the Office of Advocacy, including intake processes, case assignment workflows, scheduling, documentation practices, and overall delivery of services. Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of office procedures to ensure consistent, equitable, and efficient advocacy services. Monitor recordkeeping, data management, and compliance with institutional policies and reporting requirements. Contribute to operational planning, assessment, budgeting, problem-solving, and continuous improvement efforts to enhance office effectiveness. Support the use of data-informed practices to strengthen advocacy services and advance the mission of the office.

 

Outreach, Collaboration, and Policy Advocacy (10%) Build and maintain relationships with departments across the university to support coordinated care, reduce systemic barriers, and promote student success. Provide outreach, presentations, and educational programming to increase awareness of advocacy services, student rights and responsibilities, and available resources. Participate in institutional committees, workgroups, and initiatives that address student concerns and equity-related issues. Identify and elevate policy and practice concerns informed by student experiences and contribute to recommendations that improve institutional processes and access.

 

Other Duties as Assigned (5%) Serve as a team member in the Dean of Students department, representing the department on university and community committees as requested. Carry out additional projects and duties as assigned.

 

What You Will Need

 

• Master’s degree in education, counseling, public policy, law or related field of study, or bachelor’s degree plus two additional years of experience with advocacy, case management, student support services, advisor or other closely related areas.

• Three years of professional experience in advocacy, case management, student support services, advising, or other closely related areas.

• Experience analyzing policies, procedures, laws, or individual rights frameworks and applying them to real-world challenges.

• Experience supervising student employees, paraprofessionals, or volunteers including training, providing feedback and supporting performance and development.

• Experience organizing and managing multiple cases or projects simultaneously, including maintaining detailed records, case notes, and documentation in accordance with established guidelines and deadlines.

• A commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment.

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

This position predominately works on Corvallis campus during regular business hours with limited night and weekend commitments. On occasion, this position may be asked to work outside those times for one-off events, training, or meetings. Position works mainly in an office on campus, but will likely have in-person meetings around campus in different buildings. Remote work may be available on a limited basis.
