Clinical Medical Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a direct service position in Crusader Community Health (CCH).  This position performs various service duties and routine technical patient care tasks in accordance with agency policies and procedures and within the scope of education of a Medical Assistant. This position will work with a designated provider to support their panel and/or as a preceptor for externs and new employees. This position reports to the Medical Unit Manager or Site Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:            

 

  1. Accountable for demonstrating the qualities outlined in the “Customer Service Standards of Excellence” program when interacting with patients, their families and friends, and fellow employees. 
  2. Establishes, maintains, and promotes positive working relationships with internal and external customers, and supports the organization’s goals and objectives.
  3. Prepares charts of patients scheduled for appointments and completes quality protocol as appropriate.
  4. According to agency policies and procedures, and consistent with Medical Assistant education, performs all tasks needed to manage and support the provider’s patient panel. 
  5. Assists with unit activities, including but not limited to, operating and maintaining equipment, stocking exam rooms, preparing procedure trays, un-boxing and shelving supplies, and assisting with cleaning and sterilization of instruments according to unit schedule.
  6. Participates in team huddles as well as ongoing communication with staff regarding patient’s response to various treatments, procedures, and overall progress.
  7. Performs CLIA Waived testing per protocol and maintains skills through yearly evaluations.
  8. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or provider, communicates with patients concerning treatment procedures and other activities related to their clinical visits.
  9. Administers selected medications and injections. 
  10. Assists the provider with procedures and routes patients to other services.
  11. Assists with care coordination by completing required tasks to ensure the patient is able to complete the designated treatment plan.
  12. Schedules appointments for specialty consultations and referrals as needed.
  13. Attains goals mutually established with the Manager. 
  14. Provides an atmosphere of professionalism, privacy, and confidentiality in the clinical area.
  15. Individuals designated as preceptors will demonstrate the following: 
    1. Mentors Medical Assistant externs and new employees.
    2. Fills out all competency forms and discusses progress with Manager.
    3. Attends midterm and final evaluations of externs.
    4. Attends preceptor meetings and super user meetings.
    5. Participates in the orientation and on-boarding of new staff.
    6. Participates in new employee and extern training sessions as appropriate.
    7. Trains employees in CMA I role about CMA II role.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:                        

Knowledge of:

  6. Organizational and Community Resources

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING

 

Education:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required
  2. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Training Program
    • Training programs in process of accreditation will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
    • Graduates of a non-accredited Medical Assisting Training Program will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and must have two years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a direct patient care setting
  3. Current CPR certification
  4. Active Medical Assisting certification through AAMA, NHA or AMT 
  5. Completion and validation of Certified/Registered Medical Assistant II skills 

 

Experience:

  1. Previous experience in ambulatory care, hospital, or public health preferred
  2. Electronic Health Record 

 

Technical Knowledge:

Other Skills:  Strong computer literacy/proficiency in Microsoft Office 

Bilingual preferred (written and verbal)

 

Equipment:  PC, email, facsimile machine, computerized voice mail system, common office machines, multi-line telephone system 

 

Software Knowledge:  Windows, MS Word, I-Care, i2i, eClinical Works
