Position Summary
The Dover Area School District is seeking two student-centered, collaborative Special Education Teachers to serve in our Autistic Support programs at the elementary and secondary levels. The Autistic Support Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing specially designed instruction to meet the academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs of students with autism and related disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
This position requires a strong understanding of behavior-based instruction, structured teaching, and communication supports. The teacher will work closely with paraprofessionals, related service providers, general education teachers, and families to ensure students can access the curriculum and develop independence across school settings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Programming
- Develop and implement IEPs in compliance with IDEA, Chapter 14, and District procedures
- Provide specially designed instruction in academic, functional, behavioral, communication, and social skills
- Implement structured classroom routines and visual supports (schedules, task systems, work systems)
- Modify and adapt curriculum to meet individual student needs
- Support students in general education settings using inclusive practices when appropriate
- Utilize assistive technology and augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) systems when required
Behavior & Social-Emotional Support
- Implement and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
- Collect and analyze behavioral and academic data to guide instruction and interventions
- Teach replacement behaviors, coping strategies, and self-regulation skills
- Collaborate with behavior specialists, school psychologists, and related service providers
- Maintain a safe, structured, and predictable classroom environment
Collaboration & Team Leadership
- Supervise and guide paraprofessionals and personal care assistants (PCAs) assigned to the classroom
- Provide direction and training to support staff regarding student supports, prompting levels, and data collection
- Collaborate regularly with general education teachers to support inclusion and student success
- Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress and needs
- Participate in IEP meetings as case manager and LEA designee when appropriate
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate student records and progress monitoring data
- Complete progress reports, reevaluations, and other required documentation within timelines
- Participate in manifestation determination meetings and problem-solving teams
- Ensure implementation fidelity of IEP services and accommodations
Qualifications
- Valid Pennsylvania Special Education Teaching Certificate (PK-12 or N-12)
- Demonstrated knowledge of autism spectrum disorders and evidence-based instructional practices
- Experience with behavior supports, including data collection and intervention strategies
- Experience working with paraprofessionals or support staff preferred
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
Terms of Employment
Full-time, 190-day position
Salary and benefits per the Dover Area Education Association Agreement
Start Date: August 2026
