GIS Intern

Position Objective:
The GIS Intern will assist the City of Fridley's GIS Coordinator and Public Works divisions with infrastructure record management, utility mapping, and spatial analysis projects. The intern will also support the transition to ArcGIS mobile data collection systems, with occasional field data collection using GPS devices and mobile applications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create and edit spatial and non-spatial GIS datasets, perform data conversion, and maintain data integrity by keeping data current and accurate.
- Work with engineering records, as-built plans, and scanned documents to incorporate existing data into GIS systems and applications.
- Create and update maps, graphics, and layouts for Public Works staff and projects.
- Conduct spatial analysis and data comparison projects.
- Assist with mapping projects and provide field support as needed.
- Support staff with mobile data collection systems including ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123.
- Assist with system maintenance and data migration of work order and asset management systems.
- Collect field data using GPS equipment and tablets for infrastructure, utilities, and assets.
- Assist staff in learning and using GIS tools and applications.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for GIS-related needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate or GED certification.
- Currently enrolled in or graduated within the previous 12 months from a post-secondary educational facility pursuing a degree in GIS, Surveying, Geography, Environmental Studies, Planning, or related field.
- Completed coursework using ESRI ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Enterprise).
- Possess valid driver's license with good driving history.
- Satisfactory criminal history and background check.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, or mobile data collection applications.
- Experience with (GPS) equipment and field data collection methods.
- Experience with asset management systems or work order systems.
- Familiarity with construction plans, preferably for roads, sites, and utilities.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.

- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public, both orally and in writing.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to learn new software, procedures, and technologies.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office setting. Headaches, eyestrain, and other related occupational hazards reflect the most common potential for injury. Work is light duty and sedentary with ability to lift, carry or push up to 10 pounds. Extensive keyboarding may put incumbent at risk for repetitive motion injury or eyestrain.
Travel within the City or region to attend meetings is likely to occur several times monthly. There is limited exposure to field or construction site conditions when assisting City staff with infrastructure related activities or projects.
