Long Range Park Planning Intern

Position Title: Long Range Park Planning Intern 

Location: 12055 Government Center Pkwy, Fairfax, Virginia, 22035 

Hours: Approximately 40 hours per week from May 18th – August 14th (timeframe).  

  • This position is based 100% in the office and on-site visits.  
  • Holidays and leave are unpaid. 
  • A vehicle will be provided for fieldwork from headquarters pending the completion of FCPA’s vehicle training. 

Salary: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour 

 

Overview: The Long Range Park Planning internship position will support Fairfax County Park Authority’s Long Range Planning Section efforts. This internship is primarily office based with some field visits. 

 

Duties: 

  • The intern will conduct area-wide GIS analysis, analyze several park sites for specific recreation facility feasibility such as pickleball, support and shadow ongoing agencywide projects like the Strategic Plan and Countywide Playgrounds Study. In addition, the intern will co-lead research, analysis, and updates to the Comprehensive Plan's Urban Parks Framework along with another intern and staff. The Urban Parks Framework updates include policy making and research on urban park design elements.  
  • The intern will undergo some level of training as needed for GIS projects. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in other field and educational activities conducted by the Park Planning Branch as events arise. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the fields of planning, public policy, and parks and recreation. Each intern will have the opportunity to plan and develop a park and recreation planning project. 
  • All other duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a strong interest in park planning, urban planning, and stewardship of public lands.  
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.  
  • Knowledge and experience in planning and GIS.  
  • Applicants must be comfortable conducting site visits during summertime conditions.
