Public Archaeology Intern
Position Title: Public Archaeology Intern
Location: James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA.
Hours: 20 to 32 hours per week in-person (office and field work).
Salary: $16.50-27.50 per hour (based on experience).
Overview: Under the general supervision of the Archaeology & Collections Branch Manager, intern will assist with a variety of duties related to archaeological field and lab research, data management, collections management, and public outreach. Intern is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative and conduct related work as assigned.
Duties:
- Serve as field and lab technician; and
- Assist with the preparation of reports about nature and extent of identified cultural resources; and
- Search for and examine historical records as well as the findings of other archeological experts relative to the history of the area; and
- Utilize ArcGIS software to analyze data and prepare maps for site forms and reports; and
- Assist with artifact cataloguing and curation; and
- Assist with public outreach programs
Preferred Major or Program(s) of Study: Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must have successfully completed an archaeological field school within the past five years.
- Ability to work in adverse conditions including hot/humid weather and traverse rough
terrain. - Operation of vehicles (driver’s license required).
- Applicants must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Note: This position may not exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Individuals in these positions are not eligible for benefits and are not eligible to earn leave or receive holiday pay.
