Description:
Volunteer Tutors (Grades 3–8) provides academic support in subjects such as math reading, writing and science. Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups to help students understand classroom material, complete assignments, and build strong study habits. This role requires patience, clear communication, and a genuine commitment to helping students grow academically and personally.
The purpose of the Volunteer Tutor is to help students strengthen foundational skills, increase confidence, and achieve greater success in school. By offering personalized guidance and encouragement, tutors help close learning gaps, support students who may need extra attention, and contribute to a positive learning experience. The goal is to empower students to become more independent, motivated learners and to provide them with the support they need to thrive
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Help students with homework and core subjects (reading, writing, math).
- Explain concepts clearly and in age-appropriate ways.
- Encourage good study habits and learning skills.
- Provide positive support to build student confidence.
- Keep sessions focused, safe, and welcoming.
- Share any concerns or progress with program staff.
- Attend sessions consistently and follow program guidelines.
Required Qualifications:
- Must have accepted a Federal Work-Study award for the current academic year.
- Currently enrolled in at Saint Louis University.
- Strong understanding of core subjects such as reading, writing, and math.
- Good communication skills and ability to explain concepts clearly to younger students.
- Patience, positivity, and a genuine interest in helping children learn.
- Dependable, organized, and able to commit to scheduled tutoring sessions.
- Willingness to follow program guidelines and complete training as needed.
- Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework or experience in education, child development, or a related field.
- Previous experience working with children or youth (tutoring, mentoring, camp counseling, etc.).
- Strong skills in specific academic areas such as math, reading comprehension, or writing.
- Ability to adapt explanations to different learning styles and needs.
- Comfort leading small groups or facilitating learning activities.
- Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan effective tutoring sessions.
