- Graduate: $19–$22/hour
- Schedule: 15–28 hours per week
GENERAL SUMMARY
This internship provides hands-on experience supporting regional planning, water resources, parks and recreation, and infrastructure initiatives. The intern will work closely with staff on research, data analysis, outreach, and reporting projects that advance regional planning goals. This position is ideal for students interested in environmental planning, urban planning, water resources, parks and recreation, GIS, or related fields. The intern will gain valuable professional experience and exposure to collaborative projects with local governments and regional partners.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by interns in this job. Interns may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Assist with organizing and planning municipal trainings, including annual IDEP and One Water Campaign initiatives.
- Compile, standardize, and analyze stormwater compliance, post-construction, and other regional planning data to support reporting and decision-making.
- Maintain and update the ParkFinder inventory and support data-driven analysis of parks, trails, and recreation plans using GIS and Placer.ai tools.
- Review and document 5-year recreation plans, DNR grant applications, and municipal infrastructure projects; develop systems to track potential initiatives.
- Conduct research on regional funding opportunities, grant programs, and local planning benchmarks for parks, trails, and water resources.
- Draft, administer, and summarize surveys, mailings, and other communications for member engagement and regional outreach.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- Must be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or graduate program in a related field (e.g., urban planning, environmental science, public administration, civil engineering, or GIS).
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
- Basic familiarity with data analysis, research, and/or GIS tools.
DESIRED SKILLS
- Familiarity with GIS or mapping tools (e.g., ArcGIS, Placer.ai).
- Knowledge of water resource management, stormwater compliance, or environmental regulations.
- Familiarity with parks and recreation planning or municipal grant programs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
SKILLS INTERN WILL LEARN
- Conducting research on municipal and regional planning initiatives.
- Compiling, organizing, and analyzing stormwater compliance and parks/trails data.
- Supporting regional planning campaigns and outreach efforts.
- Applying GIS and data tools to support planning and infrastructure projects.

- Building networks and lists for outreach and engagement.
