- Graduate: $19–$22/hour
- Schedule: 15–28 hours per week
GENERAL SUMMARY
This position supports a variety of regional planning, research, and data analysis initiatives. It offers hands-on experience working with housing, economic development, aging, education, and community redevelopment projects. The intern will assist SEMCOG staff in gathering and analyzing data, preparing research summaries, and supporting member engagement efforts. This role is ideal for students interested in urban planning, community development, public policy, or related fields who want to gain practical experience contributing to regional planning initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by interns in this job. Interns may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Prepare professional summaries, one-pagers, GIS maps, and other materials related to issues such as housing, brownfields and aging based on research and data analysis.
- Develop profiles and data summaries for education members, support promotion of regional planning resources to schools.
- Assist with peer group coordination, including agenda preparation, meeting summaries, and follow-up for Education, Small Towns, and Rural Communities groups.
- Compile and summarize information on regional economic development projects for CEDS reporting.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Graduate program in Urban Studies, Planning, Community development, or a related field
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
DESIRED SKILLS
- Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) or spatial analysis tools
- Familiarity with regional planning concepts and local government operations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
SKILLS INTERN WILL LEARN
- Applying data analysis and research to real-world planning projects
- Using Placer.ai and other tools for location-based analysis
- Understanding housing, brownfield redevelopment, aging, and education planning
- Preparing professional reports, summaries, and one-page resource documents
- Supporting member engagement and peer group coordination
- Exposure to regional economic development and community planning initiatives
