- Pay Rate:
- Undergraduate: $18/hour
- Graduate: $19–$22/hour
- Schedule: 15–28 hours per week
GENERAL SUMMARY
The GIS Internship at SEMCOG supports a variety of regional planning and mapping projects that contribute to informed decision-making across Southeast Michigan. This internship provides hands-on experience in GIS data management, spatial analysis, and map production, allowing interns to further develop technical skills in ArcGIS Pro while collaborating with project teams on meaningful regional initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Create, maintain, and update GIS datasets for a variety of planning projects
- Assist with developing maps, applications, and metadata creation
- Participate in the Southeast Michigan GIS User Group meetings
- Assist staff in fulfilling data requests from SEMCOG members
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- Must be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or graduate program in GIS, geography, urban planning, data science or a related field.
- Knowledge of GIS fundamentals and experience using ArcGIS Pro or other GIS software
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage and organize spatial data
- Strong communication, problem-solving skills and the ability to ask questions
DESIRED SKILLS
- Experience and knowledge of editing GIS data
- Familiarity with regional and open datasets
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
SKILLS INTERN WILL LEARN
- Advanced use of ArcGIS Pro for data creation, editing, analysis, and mapping
- Exposure to SEMCOG’s data structure for the enterprise GIS, and GIS development techniques including programming languages
- Participate in meetings and assist in meeting preparation and presentations.
- How to collaborate in a team setting as it relates to the GIS data work.
- Assist in creating maps and developing GIS applications for regional planning purposes.
- Technical writing skills to document or update procedures.
