Position Title: Water Plant Technician / Operator 

Position Type: Full-time; Non-exempt

Minimum Pay Range: $18.63-$31.30 depending on level of TN Water Treatment Operator Certification

Salary: Dependent upon experience and qualifications

About This Opportunity:

The City of Maryville Water Plant operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  We are looking for a night shift technician / operator to work 8, 10 and 12-hour shifts between 11:00 pm-11:00 am.  Schedule is 40 hours per week.  Rotating schedule - work 8 days, off 6    days. 

The City of Maryville is hiring a full-time Water Plant Technician / Operator. This position assists in the maintenance and operation of the Water Filtration Plant, providing the Maryville community with top quality drinking water that exceeds all federal and state regulations.

Duties include monitoring water levels and flows, recording instrument readings, assisting with the maintenance and repair of plant equipment, collecting samples for laboratory testing, and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility.

Career opportunity offering advancement with the completion of TN Water Operator certifications. Grade 3 or 4 operator certification preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains and operates a water treatment plant; records readings from instruments; maintains records on plant operations; monitors levels and flows and makes appropriate adjustments.
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of plant equipment.
  • Collects samples; performs laboratory tests in the absence of the Laboratory Technician.
  • Handles chemicals and calculates correct dosage.
  • Performs general custodial and grounds maintenance work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Some knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in water treatment operations;
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions; 
  • Some knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment; 
  • Ability to adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines and other water plant equipment; 
  • Ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operation; 
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports; 
  • Skill in the use and care of hand tools; 
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations; 
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Word/Excel)

 

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of Tennessee.
  • Must be available to work night shift, evening shift, weekends, and occasional day shift.
  • Grade III or Grade IV Water Treatment Operator certification preferred.

Physical Requirements:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequent sitting and tasting or smelling and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;  frequent working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and wearing a safety chemical escape mask; work is generally in a moderately noisy location.
