Personal Care Aid Counselor

Personal Care Aid/Counselor (Seasonal)

JOB SUMMARY: Provides primary supervision and direct care to a cabin group of campers; responsible for planning and implementing camp and/or cabin activities and campers in their personal growth and daily living skills; supervises Counselors-In-Training (CIT), adheres to all Camp policies, and performs other duties as assigned.

This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.

RESPONSIBLE TO:Camp Supervisors, Full-Time Program Staff

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides primary supervision and direct care to campers to meet the intent camper outcomes:
    1. Assist with camper’s personal care and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) (Including but not limited to: feeding, personal and oral hygiene, assisting in toileting, catheterization, putting on AFOs, assisting campers with ambulation, transferring campers in and out of wheelchairs as needed" and other duties).
    2. Educate self, peers, and counselors-in-training on each camper’s medical condition to ensure that health precautions and procedures are followed. 
    3. Assist the camp nurse with the care of assigned campers as necessary and report any changes in condition to nurse.
  2. Participates in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes:
    1. Responsible for leading, implementing, and assisting with camp and/or cabin activities.
    2. Collaborate with campers and staff in planning and organizing activities for campers.
    3. Adapt activities to meet campers’ abilities and needs 
    4. Generate enthusiasm and promote camp spirit.
  3. Provides leadership and supervision:
    1. Lead peers (when assigned) counselors-in-training and campers during Camp activities and cabin.
    2. Set good example for campers, peers, and counselors-in-training.
    3. Assists in the evaluation of counselors-in-training and campers. 
  4. Maintains records and submits reports:
    1. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communications as required.
    2. Complete and submit all paperwork in a timely manner.
    3. Complete evaluations and appropriate forms clearly and effectively77
    4. Maintain records of patient progress which could include documenting camper progress throughout the camp session.
  5. Adheres to all Camp policies: 
    1. Participate in staff training.
    2. Follow Camp rules and regulations.
    3. Ensure the cleanliness of the cabin area and camp. 
    4. Ensure compliance with camp health/safety regulations and all camp policies and procedures.
    5. Punctual and manages personal time off in accordance with Camp policy.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to fully participate in all camp activities and assist campers to participate.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  3. Ability to provide supervision and leadership for campers, counselors-in-training, peers, and camp activities.
  4. Ability to endure spending time out in summer weather and outdoor environments.
  5. Ability to regularly lift and/or move at least 50 pounds and push wheelchairs.
  6. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
  7. Ability to perform personal self-help skills, including grooming, toileting, showering, feeding and all other personal hygiene functions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Support Camp Aldersgate’s mission and vision, their facilities, and their staff.
  3. Must be mature and responsible, have good character, integrity, and the ability to adapt.
  4. Excited to work alongside others of varying backgrounds, experiences, and identities.
  5. Must enjoy working with children/youth with disabilities in an outdoor setting.
  6. Willingness to collaborate with peers.
  7. Any or all these requirements may be substituted for equivalent qualifications.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience working with individuals with disabilities and/or medical conditions.
  2. Knowledge of medical conditions and physical disabilities served by Camp Aldersgate preferred.
  3. Interested in pursuing a career in health care, nursing, education, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field. 
  4. Previous healthcare or patient care experience in a hospital, clinic, nursing home setting, or other related facility.
  5. One year of experience with the Camp Aldersgate Counselor-in-Training program.
  6. Experience in a camp setting.
  7. Previous healthcare or patient care experience or experience with a hospital, clinic, nursing home or in another setting.
