Become an OARS Peer Mentor – Empower, Inspire, and Lead First-Year Students!

Are you ready to make a difference, create impactful connections, and shape the college experience for first-year students? The Office of Academic and Retention Support (OARS) is seeking energetic, supportive, and committed students to step into the role of Peer Mentor for the 2026–2027 academic year. This is your chance to be a role model, inspire new Roos, and showcase your UA pride!

What You’ll Be Doing as a Peer Mentor:

Your role is all about support, connection, and guidance. You’ll:

  • Mentor First-Year Roos: Develop strong one-on-one relationships with a caseload of mentees, supporting them as they navigate their academic and personal journeys.
  • Weekly Check-Ins: Stay connected by communicating with mentees weekly, offering encouragement, and celebrating accomplishments.
  • Goal setting: Help students develop meaningful academic and personal goals, tracking their progress each semester.
  • Plan Engagements: Assist with organizing fun and impactful academic and social events to foster a sense of belonging.
  • Document Achievement: Keep thorough records of your mentees’ progress and successes to support their growth.
  • Lead by Example: Represent OARS positively at campus events and activities while promoting resources and opportunities.
  • Be a Team Player: Take on additional mentorship responsibilities when needed to keep making a positive difference.

What We’re Looking For in You:

Students who shine in this role exhibit the following:

  • Enthusiasm for Helping Others: You’re passionate about making a difference and supporting first-year students through their transitions.
  • Experience as a Roo: You’ve completed at least two semesters at The University of Akron, with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Strong Academic or Leadership Skills: You’re equipped to balance academic and mentorship responsibilities while inspiring those around you.
  • Tech-Savviness: You’re comfortable using Microsoft 365 and basic computer tools to communicate and manage tasks.
  • Dependability and Commitment: You’re a full-time student who thrives in both independent work and collaborative environments.

Important Details to Know:

  • Work Hours: Up to 8 hours per week during Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 (120 total hours each semester).
  • Pay: Earn $13 per hour (up to $3,120 per year).
  • Mandatory Training: Participate in two days of essential paid virtual training on August 6th and 7th, 2026, to get ready for an amazing year of mentorship.
  • Attendance Requirements: Attend scheduled staff meetings, training sessions, and program activities throughout the academic year.
