The Office of Academic and Retention Support (OARS) is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic students to join our team as Peer Mentors for the Goodyear Driving Opportunity Scholarship program. What You’ll Be Doing:
This role is about more than mentoring; it’s about inspiring your peers to succeed! Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll do:
- Mentor Students One-on-One: Dedicate 10-15 hours weekly during the Fall 2026 – Spring 2027 academic year to support students in navigating both their academic and personal journeys.
- Celebrate Success: Track students’ progress and cheer them on as they reach their goals.
- Personalize Support Plans: Design tailored strategies to suit the unique needs and learning styles of each student you mentor.
- Document Notes & Updates: Prepare service notes, detailed session summaries, and end-of-semester progress reports.
- Collaborate: Partner with the Director of Mentorship and Student Development to create innovative programs, workshops, and strategies for fostering student success.
What We’re Looking For in a Mentor:
If most of the following describes you, you’d be a great fit:
- A passion for helping students succeed. You’re driven to see others thrive!
- Currently a sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate student at The University of Akron with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. You’ve completed at least two semesters and feel ready to take on a leadership role.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to connect with individuals with different learning styles.
- Strong time management, organizational abilities, and a knack for goal-setting – with the desire to share these skills with others.
Additional Skills (Preferred):
- Prior experience in mentoring or peer-support roles.
- Enthusiasm for working with individuals from various backgrounds.
- Experience using Excel or reporting tools to organize and track progress.
Guidance for Recommendation Letters:
As part of your application, you’ll need two recommendation letters. These should address:
- Your ability to mentor or guide peers.
- Your communication and organizational skills.
- Examples of your leadership, ability to collaborate, or academic and personal achievements.
Encourage your references to provide their candid perspective of your potential and qualifications for this role.
