Scope:

The Process Chemist - Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all production buildings and processes on either the second or third shift. This position will learn all aspects of the chemical process including distillations, hydrogenation, methylations, quaternizations, spray drying, and filtration. This position requires strong organizational, technical, motivational, and problem-solving skills. The ability to communicate technical information effectively on all levels within the organization is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 

  • Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Process Chemist - Shift Supervisor will oversee all aspects of Production including the QC laboratory. 
  • The Process Chemist - Shift Supervisor will ensure that all Team Members/Chemical Operators are following the batch sheets and operating in a safe environment. This will involve overseeing the mixing and blending of liquid and powder raw materials into finished products. 
  • This position will oversee the following types of chemical procedures in a manufacturing environment: distillation, esterification, filtrations, hydrogenation, methylations, polymerizations, quaternizations, reductive amination, and spray drying.
  • Ensure that the Operators are diligently and accurately weighing and charging raw materials, completing all paperwork, recording key information, including lot numbers, mix times etc. according to Standard Manufacturing Procedures/Manufacturing Batch Record.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of each building, processes, procedures, warehouse locations, manufacturing batch records, and raw materials.
  • Ensures that QC is proving accurate results in a timely manner.
  • In addition, the incumbent must adhere to all safety and quality policies and be committed to continuous improvement by suggesting updates to processes and procedures, as necessary. 
  • Basic understanding of Statistical Process Control and Six Sigma is a plus.

Other Duties:

 

  • For the first two years the Process Chemist - Shift Supervisor may make process enhancement recommendations to the Senior Process Chemist Engineer, Process Chemist, or Operations Manager.
  • Recommend optimizing plant performance by monitoring process equipment and conditions using information systems including process levels, temperatures, pressures, and flow rates.
  • Meet on a weekly basis with the Senior Process Chemical Engineer, Process Chemist, and Operations Manager to discuss issues on the second and third shifts with a goal to enhance quality and reduce cycle times.
  • Ensure operational activities and process performance are aligned with plant and business goals.
  • Perform immediate response activities and manage unplanned events.
  • Oversee process equipment troubleshooting, minor repairs, improvements, and preventative maintenance, utilizing appropriate processes and disciplines.
  • Submit a Daily Report on the shift activities and events to the Operations Manager.

Qualifications (Required):
 

  • BS or BA Degree in Chemistry.
  • Ideally two or more years in a leadership role, such as college level sports, ROTC, Student Government, or other leadership or military experience.
  • Through understanding of Organic Chemistry.
  • Proficient in computers including using Excel, Word, and other programs.
  • Ability to read, write and verbally communication in English is required.
  • Strong multi-tasking, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a chemical production environment and wear Personal Protective Equipment including hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, full face respirator (no facial hair), and hearing protection when necessary.
  • Willing and able to work 2nd, 3rd, or staggered shift, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required by the business.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb stairs, reach overhead, lift up to 50lbs, and have excellent manual dexterity and visual acuity, with or without accommodation.

If the individual performs well in this position, they could move into more Senior Production roles, R&D, QC, Development & Applications, Sales, or Product Management.
