Position Title: 2026 Upward Bound San Marcos Summer Program Residential Assistant

Location: Texas State University - San Marcos Campus, In-Person, Non-Remote

 

About Upward Bound: Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program operating under the US Department of Education. Our program aims to provide early intervention academic preparation to 89 high school students in the Central Texas area, empowering them to stay in school and become college ready.

 

Job Summary: Upward Bound is seeking qualified candidates to assist with various residential duties. The program traditionally conducts a six-week residential initiative each summer, aiming to empower college-bound high school students who demonstrate the potential for success in higher education. The summer program integrates academic courses with social activities, trips, and other experiences, fostering holistic growth and development among participants. 

 

Terms/Conditions of Employment:

  • Mandatory Training Dates: May 26th – May 29th, 2026 (Texas State University Campus)
  • Time Commitment: May 26th – July 3rd, 2026, Sunday – Friday
  • Salary: $10.00/hr.
  • This is a grant funded position. This position is contingent on the availability of grant funding.
  • Applicants selected for hire must pass a Texas State University background check, and background checks from applicable school districts.
  • Evaluation Process: Summer Program RA’s will be evaluated on their performance at the end of the summer session by the Grant Director and Grant Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Junior standing or above, preferred.
  • Major in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or related field.
  • Experience working with high school students preferred.
  • Prior experience in a residential setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated motivational and organizational skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must not have another job or be enrolled in more than one summer course at Texas State University or another university (if you are enrolled in a course at Texas State you can only work 24 hours a week).
  • Ability to pass a stringent background check (TXST, HCISD, SMCISD)

Responsibilities:

  • Reside in the residence hall, Sunday evening through Friday afternoon throughout the summer program.
  • Be on call from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, including special event weekends
  • Supervise 89 program participants, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Enforce program and residence hall rules and regulations.
  • Assist in the effective operation of the residence hall, fostering a safe and conducive environment for living and learning.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor to student participants.
  • Develop and facilitate programs and recreation activities aimed at student growth and maturity.
  • Be available to students and other Upward Bound staff for conferences addressing student issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Upward Bound staff.

 

Note: Position is contracted for the 2026 Summer Residential Program only. This position is contingent upon the grant funding.
