Mission of Student Success Initiatives

Housed within the Division of Undergraduate Education, Student Success Initiatives (SSI), Transfer Student Center, and TRIO are dedicated to empowering students throughout their academic, professional, and personal endeavors. We provide comprehensive support in these areas to help students thrive at UCI and beyond. Our mission centers on supporting students from historically underrepresented populations including, but not limited to: first-generation students, low-income students, and foster youth. Through our programs and resources, we create opportunities for these students to make fluid academic and social transitions to university life, fostering both productivity and engagement as they pursue their goals at UCI.
 

Position Summary

An SSI/TSC/TRIO Peer Tutor is a current UCI undergraduate student who has excelled in a specific academic area and has been chosen to hold drop-in tutoring hours as well as individual tutoring hours for program participants. Peer Tutors are responsible for facilitating students’ independent learning by actively involving students in the course material. Tutors foster active learning and develop students’ self-confidence by answering questions, encouraging students to share ideas and solutions through work on paper or whiteboards, facilitating small group activities, and using various questioning strategies. Tutors have the opportunity to make an important contribution towards SSI/TSC/TRIO students' academic success. 

 

As a SSI Peer Tutor, you will

  • Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions for program participants in designated subjects.
  • Manage tutoring calendar for drop-in and scheduled appointments quarterly.
  • Create and maintain pre-tutoring session forms to adequately prepare for scheduled tutoring sessions.
  • Accurately and efficiently document meetings with students, ensuring accurate and comprehensive records of interactions and discussions.
  • Attend and occasionally facilitate weekly team meetings, offering valuable insights into improving tutoring processes and strategies.
  • Demonstrate and model scholarship, leadership, and a dedication of personal, professional, and social development 
  • Perform administrative duties, including data entry, email correspondence, and maintenance of attendance records
  • Represent SSI/TSC/TRIO at campus events by providing individuals with general program information. 

 

Eligibility Requirements

Peer Tutors MUST:

  • Be a current undergraduate student at UCI 
  • Have a junior or senior standing during the 2026-2027 academic year (preferred). Graduate students are not eligible for this role. 
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above. 
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and understanding of diverse populations.  
  • A grade of “A” in the course(s) being tutored; those who can tutor multiple classes and entire series courses are competitive applicants. 
  • Be available to work 6-8 hours a week in person at the SSI office and 2 hours after 5PM via Zoom during the academic year
  • Commit to the position for the entirety of the 2026-2027 academic school year (September 14th, 2026-June 11th, 2027).  
  • Attend weekly team meetings dates and times TBD
  • Attend and participate in mandatory SSI/TSC/TRIO Student Staff training from September 14th, 2026 - September 18th 2026 from 9am-5pm which will be held in person on campus.
    • Students are responsible for making arrangements to attend training in advance
  • Attend quarterly check-ins with your supervisor. 
  • Completing the required Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) requires you to provide documents that verify you are eligible to work in the USA.

  • Chemistry: 1A, 1B, 1C, 1LC, 1LD, 51A, 51B, 51C, 51LC 
  • Math: 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 2D, 3A, 3D, 2E 
  • Physics: 2, 3A, 3B, 3C, 7C, 7D, 7E 
  • Writing: 50, 60, Human Core 
  • Statistics: 5, 6, 7, 8
  • Study Skills
