TRIO Mission
TRIO SSS Classic and TRIO SSS STEM are federally funded student success programs housed in Student Success Initiatives (SSI) at UCI. We support the retention and graduation of students who identify as first-generation college students, come from low-income backgrounds, or receive disability services. TRIO STEM works exclusively with STEM majors and/or students interested in pursuing a Health Career. Through mentoring, tutoring, enrichment workshops, personal guidance, and a structured roadmap for success, TRIO empowers students to meet their personal, academic, and post-graduate goals. Position Summary
TRIO Peer Mentors play a vital role in fostering a supportive and affirming space for TRIO students. Mentors serve as knowledgeable guides and positive role models, helping mentees navigate UCI, build community, and develop lifelong skills. This is an in-person, paid student leadership position that offers valuable experience in mentoring, outreach, event coordination, and student services.
Mentor Duties & Responsibilities
- Schedule regular meetings with mentees to provide academic, personal, and professional support
- Help mentees build time management, study skills, and goal-setting strategies
- Share campus knowledge and help mentees access campus and community resources
- Build meaningful and affirming relationships with mentees
- Assist in planning and facilitating quarterly events and workshops
- Promote TRIO events using design tools and social media platforms
- Represent TRIO Scholars and SSI at campus-wide events, tabling opportunities, presentations, or student panels
- Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings
- Provide administrative support, including data entry, email outreach, and attendance tracking
- Maintain timely and professional communication with mentees, staff, and program leadership
Expectations & Requirements
- Commit to the position for the entirety of the 2026-2027 academic school year (September 14th, 2026-June 11th, 2027).
- Attend and participate in mandatory TRIO Student Staff training from September 14th, 2026 - September 18th 2026 from 9am-5pm which will be held in person on campus.
- Students are responsible for making arrangements to attend training in advance.
- Work up to 8 hours per week on-site at the SSI office
- Demonstrate professionalism in verbal and written communication
- Be responsive, timely, and proactive with team responsibilities and deadlines
- Complete required I-9 verification paperwork to confirm U.S. work eligibility
Qualifications
- Be a full time UCI student of sophomore, junior, or senior standing by fall 2026 OR be a transfer student who has been at UCI for at least one academic year by date of employment.
- TRIO STEM & Health Careers Peer Mentors should be majoring in a STEM field or pursuing a health careers pathway.
- Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time their application is submitted, start of their employment, and throughout their employment in TRIO.
- If GPA is lower than a 3.0, please utilize the cover letter to explain why and what steps you are taking to improve academically.
- Passion for educational equity and working with diverse student populations
- Experience in TRIO or similar programs (as participant or student leader)
- Junior or senior standing during the 2026-2027 academic year is preferred.
