TRIO STEM Tutor

General Description/Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of Grants, the TRIO STEM Tutor will conduct tutoring sessions, study groups, and individual tutoring for TRIO STEM students. The responsibilities include maintaining the TRIO STEM Study room, organizing materials, arranging check in/check out of students, attending meetings and training sessions as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree or Junior level standing in baccalaureate degree in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, or other related degree with extensive math coursework including calculus
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues and barriers facing the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) population

Required Experience

  • One year of experience tutoring adult learners in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, or biology including students with disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience working with small groups
  • Experience developing or adapting instructional materials

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time, related professional experience working with students in a college environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, biology or related degree with extensive math coursework including calculus
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

Licenses and Certificates

  • A reliable personal vehicle, a good driving record, and a valid driver’s license.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct tutoring sessions, study groups, and individual tutoring for TRIO STEM students.
  • Maintain the TRIO STEM study room and its material.
  • Check in/out students.
  • Attend meeting and training sessions when needed.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, cultural background, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.
