Swing Court Reporter

SWING COURT REPORTER

ST. CHARLES COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

 

Starting Salary: $57,265.68 per year

JOB OVERVIEW: The purpose of this position is to assist with jury and bench trials for Visiting/Special/Senior Judges who are assigned to cases in Circuit Court. They will help cover dockets when current court reporters are unavailable and help with preparing transcripts. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for making a word-for-word transcript of all court proceedings.

 

  • Takes full stenographic notes of the oral evidence offered in every cause tried in court to include all objections to the admissibility of testimony, rulings of the court thereon, and exceptions to such rulings. 

 

  • Preserve all official notes taken in court and provide accurate transcripts to the person or persons requesting the same within a reasonable amount of time, contingent upon payments of fees.

 

  • Perform a variety of legal office support work, including preparing letters, correspondence, forms, and other documents.

 

  • Edit, proofread, and correct written materials.

 

  • Maintain copies of documents.

 

  • Maintain, monitor, and update files.

 

  • Generate reports.

 

  • Operate office equipment.

 

  • Perform other courtroom duties as assigned. 

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Education
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.

 

  • Certifications
    • Certified Court Reporter (CCR) as provided by Rule 14 of the Missouri State Supreme Court Rules.

 

  • Job Experience
    • Additional training in the field of Court Stenography.

 

  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities
    • Knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications related to court reporting work.
    • Knowledge of filing and electronic record-keeping systems.
    • Knowledge of legal processes and terminology.
    • Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
    • Advanced skill in communicating effectively using the English language, both orally and in writing.
    • Skill in reading and preparing legal documents.
    • Skill in application of state and federal guidelines, rules, and statutes to perform essential functions of the position.
    • Advanced skill in discretion and maintaining confidential information.
    • Advanced skill in handling stress successfully and the ability to work well with other employees, court professionals, and the public.
    • Ability to multitask. 
    • Ability to learn and apply policies, procedures, documents, and terminology affecting assigned functions. 
    • Advanced ability to work independently and follow instructions.
