This position is for an intern interested in contributing to the ongoing ecosystem restoration efforts in South Florida. The role involves contributing to work for the design and operation of the existing and new water control infrastructure for flood protection and to ensure water supply in South Florida. This opening is for a position in the Hydrometric Services Unit (HMS) of the Hydro Data Management (HDM) Section, within the Hydraulics and Hydrology Bureau. HMS is responsible for hydrometric services that include field flow measurements and canal bed scouring assessments made with cutting edge hydroacoustic and geopositioning equipment.
The selected applicant will be involved in measurements of:
a) Open-channel flows near hydraulic structures by advanced hydroacoustic flow meters such as Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) and acoustic point velocimeters (ADVs).
b) Culvert flows by Acoustic Doppler Flowmeter.
c) Pressurized flows in pipelines by ultrasonic time-of-travel flow meters.
d) Water stages in open channels by portable stage sensors.
e) Canal bed scouring by ADCP-RTK/PPK approaches from a moving boat.
Education/Experience Guide:
Achieved classification as a college level Junior or above in a related degree program at a college or university accredited by a recognized national or regional accreditation association. Must have coursework relevant to the position being accepted and no experience is required. The student must have a 3.0 average or higher and maintain an average grade of B or above in all major fields of study.
Undergraduate level interns will be paid $17/hour and work a maximum of 32 hours per week for a maximum internship duration of 4 months.
Graduate and Doctoral level interns will be paid $19/hour and work a maximum of 32 hours per week for a maximum internship duration of 4 months.
