Competitive Sports Assistant
Position Description
Competitive Sports Assistants enjoy working in a fun, active sports environment. They have the opportunity to continue their involvement in their favorite sports, gain lifelong skills, and become a part of a strong community. The primary role of the CSA is executing our nightly leagues and events. Flexible schedules with weekday and weekend shifts are available.
Task & Supervision
Competitive Sports Assistants receive direct supervision and guidance from the Competitive Sports Leadership Team (Assistant Director, Coordinator and Graduate Assistant/Intern for the Competitive Sports Program) and Competitive Sports Supervisors that oversee and manage daily operations for events. It is expected for Competitive Sports Officials to operate within their training enforcing policies within game settings. As needed, officials must be open to receiving and processing feedback as well as requesting assistance for situations they may be unsure of how to manage.
Competitive Sports Assistants are responsible for checking in participants, and guiding spectators and guests as necessary during scheduled shifts. This will require staff to communicate and interact with a diverse group of individuals including intramural participants, club sport members, and patrons that may be utilizing the space prior to or after events. Assistants must consistently and fairly enforce the rules of the event they are. Required preseason training for all events will be provided.
Competitive Sports Assistants daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the follow:
Daily Operations Supervision (60%)
- Consistently enforce rules and policies to limit situations from escalating and play from becoming overly physical
- Represent the Department of Recreation & Wellness in a professional manner at all times
- Maintain regular communication with professional supervisors and respond to work-related requests in a timely manner
- Facilitate communication between various user groups and staff
- Check in participants for each event
- Serve as a scorekeeper and track stats for given events
- Assist supervisor in facility preparation and clean-up for all scheduled shifts
- Notify supervisor or leadership team of situational concerns, operational needs and suggestions
- Assist in completion of any necessary documents for the shift
Staff Training & Development (25%)
- Attend all required staff meetings and trainings
- Assist in staff development depending on experience and expertise within a given event offering
- Assist with event recordings as part of the officials’ evaluation process
- Contribute to self-improvement and program development during scheduled evaluations
Risk Management & Conflict Resolution (10%)
- Continually inspect facilities and monitor weather conditions to ensure a safe environment is provided for program participants and spectators throughout event and report to supervisor any concerns
- Assist with dealing with patrons who are causing disturbances or persist in violating expressed policies and procedures by informing supervisor on shift and completing required portions of documentation
- Assist with directing EMS services when necessary monitoring scene and other participants and spectators within the scope of training provided
- Follow department emergency action plan as needed
- Consistently enforce rules and policies to limit situations from escalating and play from becoming overly physical
Marketing & Promotions (5%)
- Represent the Department of Recreation & Wellness in a professional manner as a liaison with participants and spectators
- Assist with program marketing
Required Skills, Experience, and Certifications
- Must be a currently enrolled degree-seeking student in good academic standing at UNCG
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with others
- Availability to work a minimum of three (3) nights Sunday through Thursday
- Willing to work evening, weekend and occasionally morning hours.
- Able to lift up-to 25 pounds in an active, fast-paced environment
- Must be available to work a minimum of 6-8 hours on a weekly basis
- Risk Management training, and Blood Borne Pathogen training (ability to obtain upon hire)
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals to explain policies/procedures and market the Intramural Sports Program
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment
Preferred Skills, Experience, and Certifications
- Officiating experience at or above the interscholastic level
- General interest in sports and previous experience participating in offered sports
- Previous customer service experience
