Intern - Fleet Mechanic
Summer Internship opportunities are available to students only. To be eligible for a summer internship, students must be graduating after August 7, 2026, or continuing their education. The Summer Internship begins on May 18, 2026, and ends on August 7, 2026.
Internship Description:
Summer Internship opportunities are available to students enrolled or completing an accredited Diesel Engine or Automotive Program.
The intern will assist with servicing, diagnosing and repairing District fleet units including cars, trucks, diesel engines, and small and heavy equipment. Will shadow and work with other Fleet Technicians on a rotational basis.
West Palm Beach Field Station Fleet Department: Hours of operation are 6:30am – 3:00pm, Monday – Friday.
The work week for this position consists of four 8-hour days, Monday through Friday, and the successful candidate will report to the District’s Field Station located in West Palm Beach, FL.
Education/Experience Guide:
Must be enrolled in an accredited (ASE or NATF) Diesel Engine Mechanics Program or recently completed the Program. No experience required.
Job Responsibilities:
Position established for students enrolled in technical college or school accepted for internship into the South Florida Water Management District's Cooperative Education Opportunity Program. Work requires formal knowledge based on internship position of heavy equipment operations, automotive service, diesel engines, electrical, welding and fabrication, or hydraulic maintenance & repair. Good oral and written communications skills. Reliability in completing assigned tasks in a professional and efficient manner. Ability to learn computer applications commensurate with assigned duties as determined by supervisor or manager.
Qualifications:
Typically has a completed 30+ hours of a technical program at a technical college or school accredited by a recognized national or regional accreditation association. Must have course work relevant to the position being accepted and no experience is required. Must be enrolled in the technical college or school co-op program and have the grade point average required for participation in the program. Where no standard exists, the student must maintain a 2.0 average and maintain an average grade of C or above in all major fields of study. and. Licenses: Valid State of Florida Driver's License. A Commercial Driver's License may be required.
Education/Experience Guide:
Achieved classification as a college level Junior or above in a related degree program at a college or university accredited by a recognized national or regional accreditation association. Must have coursework relevant to the position being accepted and no experience is required. The student must have a 3.0 average or higher and maintain an average grade of B or above in all major fields of study.
Undergraduate level interns will be paid $17/hour and work a maximum of 32 hours per week for a maximum internship duration of 4 months.
Graduate and Doctoral level interns will be paid $19/hour and work a maximum of 32 hours per week for a maximum internship duration of 4 months.
