Communications Assistant

The University of Iowa Office of Admissions is looking for a current undergraduate student to help with outreach communications. As a Communications Assistant, you’ll support prospective student recruitment by sending personalized messages that encourage future Hawkeyes to learn more about the University of Iowa.

POSITION DETAILS

  • Starting pay: $12.50 per hour
  • Hours: 10–15 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule to fit around classes
  • No work required during university breaks

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Write individualized, handwritten postcards to high school juniors and seniors who may be interested in the University of Iowa
  • Keep simple digital records of the postcards you send
  • Share ideas for new ways we can connect with prospective students
  • Stay in regular contact with your supervisor about your tasks and progress
  • Drop off completed postcards in person on a weekly basis at a scheduled drop-off time
  • Follow university guidelines for handling student information

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Strong written communication skills, including spelling and grammar
  • Excellent penmanship/handwriting
  • Solid organizational skills

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Professional writing: tailor clear, friendly messages for different audiences
  • Attention to detail: check spelling, grammar, and names to keep messages accurate
  • Time management: plan your week, meet deadlines, and manage 10–15 hours of work
  • Organization and record-keeping: track what you send and keep simple digital records
  • Feedback and growth: use supervisor feedback to improve your writing and workflow
  • Collaboration: share ideas with staff and help shape how Iowa reaches future students

TRAINING AND SUPPORT

You do not need to know all of this on day one. In this position, you will:

  • Receive training on writing style, postcard content, and record-keeping
  • Get regular check-ins with your supervisor to review your progress
  • Receive feedback on your writing, organization, and communication
  • Have chances to ask questions and suggest new approaches
