Electrical Engineer Intern

POSITION SUMMARY

Support the engineering and planning of the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU) electrical facilities and operations.  Work would include, but not limited to, the review and preparation of designs, reports, studies, layouts, and estimates of electrical projects.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare and review engineering studies, design analyses, specifications and cost estimates
  • Design overhead and underground distribution infrastructure up to 13.8kV
  • Apply standard engineering practices and techniques
  • Support Engineering and Operations staff on projects to improve electric operations
  • Perform complex engineering calculations to support design and operations
  • Communicate complex ideas and solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Calculate load flow and available fault current for both customers and the electric system
  • Perform account reviews for commercial and industrial customers
  • Verify and draw utility assets and infrastructure in modeling program
  • Provide support to other departments on projects and tasks 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Basic understanding of CAD or other drafting software
  • Ability to multi-task, organize and manage multiple projects and deadlines at once
  • Proficient time management skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Critical thinking
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Seeking an Engineering Degree from an ABET accredited university
  • Familiar with utility operations and terminology
  • Knowledge of electrical power theory
  • Basic understanding of NESC, NEC, NFPA 70E, ANSI, and OSHA
  • Valid driver’s license

An employee in this position spends the majority of their time in an office setting with a controlled climate where they sit or stand at a computer for extended periods of time, are required to talk or hear by communicating in-person and/or on the telephone, walk, sit, move around the office.  The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. However, employee may also need to traverse uneven ground, work in inclement weather to perform field work and work around energized high-voltage equipment.

Employee may frequently be required to use hands or fingers to handle, reach or feel objects, tools or controls with hands and arms. This individual must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
