Community Development Internship: Recreation, Marketing, and Communications Coordinator
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Job Summary: Responsible for the coordination of the City of Princeton's special events partnering with the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. Facilitation of internal and external communication, marketing, and funding sources as appropriate for various events. Works closely with local civic organizations on project facilitation. Operates and markets Surrey Bike program. Assists Splash Park Coordinator with marketing and promotions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Communication
- Develop and implement a communications strategy utilizing multiple media platforms to communicate the objectives outlined by the Mayor, City Council and Department Heads for the City to the Community.
- Interact with City residents, businesses owners, department personnel and public officials to provide information relating to recreation and community development programs as requested.
- Update the City website and other social media outlets.
- Conduct outreach and community engagement activities to build community pride.
- Respond courteously to citizen complaints and inquiries.
- Write grants or pursue other funding sources to supplement the costs of events/programs as directed.
- Develop and implement Splash Park Event marketing and promotion of sponsorships in collaboration with the Splash Park Coordinator.
- Manages, operates and markets the Surrey Bike Program
Recreation
- Supervise City recreational programs, including the Surrey Bike rental program.
- Participate in and is present at all sponsored events.
- Promote recreation and community programs through social media, advertisements, flyers, coordination with media outlets etc.
- Coordinate recreation and community activities with other community groups and organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, Age Friendly, businesses, churches, schools, and local civic organizations.
- Provide written or verbal updates at Park Board and City Council meetings as requested.
- Prepare an annual report listing all recreation activities for the year along with participation numbers.
- Evaluate programs on an on-going basis for community interest and recommend changes or propose new programs as needed.
- Establish and maintain a strong base of volunteers to assist with larger community events.
- Plan, coordinate and implement other employee/community events as needed.
- Develop and implement an event sponsorship plan for approval by the Community Development Planner.
- Identify and purchase necessary supplies and equipment for recreation and community programs with approval from the Community Development Planner.
- Oversee the care, operation, inventory and maintenance of all equipment and facilities used by recreation department and community programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from or currently enrolled in a college program working toward a degree in communications, public relations, community development, recreation/physical education, or related field is preferred. Experience in communications, public relations, recreation/program management experience; or any combination of training and experience which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities are ideal but not required. Experience in managing communication and/or recreation programs for other cities will be given additional consideration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability and willingness to work a flexible work schedule which may include weekends or the occasional night meeting; Possess a valid motor vehicle operator license; Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; Open to new ideas and the innovation to identify and design new programs; Knowledge of life-safety issues related to recreation programs; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with other city agencies and departments, city officials and employees; Ability to work courteously and maintain effective relationships and communication with the general public and local organizations; Ability to deal tactfully and responsively to changes in programming due unforeseen circumstances; Ability to deal courteously with the public.
Knowledge of community communication as well as recreation work and administration; Knowledge of budget principles; Ability to develop and implement well-rounded communication strategies and recreation and community programs; Ability to supervise several volunteers and workers engaged in varied tasks simultaneously; Ability to safely operate and maintain all departmental equipment, and to train others in the same; Ability to accurately prepare written reports; Ability to effectively promote recreation and community programs; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Experience managing a website and multiple social media platforms; Working knowledge of photographic and video recording equipment and the ability to edit photo and video content for electronic distribution.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a part-time hourly (non-exempt) position. Attendance in the evening, weekends and/or holidays is required when activities fall on those days. Hours in the office are to be adjusted to accommodate evening events and are not to exceed 20 hours without prior authorization. Must be able to start position in May on or before May 11, 2026.
SALARY
Pay is at Grade 3, $15.00 per hour. Minimum of 20 hours per week.

EQUIPMENT
Intern will be trained in equipment operations by the Community Development Director and provided a device to use for the purpose of completing required tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office setting, as well as on location at parks and throughout the City of Princeton. Occasionally required to work in adverse weather conditions. Sometimes work hours will be required outside of the normal work week and could include weekends. This job involves dealing with customers who may be emotionally charged over an issue.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
