Job Summary
Assist faculty and students in the teaching laboratories, assist stockroom supervisor to set up and clean up labs, grade student lab reports, promote lab safety, and perform the duties associated with supporting the faculty for chemistry and biochemistry lab courses; support college initiatives toward inclusion, equity, and anti-racism. The paraprofessional position is 10-months in the academic year with the possibility of a second year.
Responsibilities
• Assist the stockroom supervisor to prepare lab chemicals and supplies, clean up after labs, and dispose of laboratory waste for all labs and preparation spaces.
• Work with faculty to assist in lab classes; assist students with necessary concepts and demonstrate lab techniques; schedule student office hours.
• Attend annual lab, chemical and equipment safety training; confer with faculty and supervisor to promote and model safe lab practices; conduct lab safety lectures for students in each lab course and ensure appropriate student PPE usage.
• Assist in lab drawer check-in, check-out, and maintenance of lab equipment.
• Support laboratory grading needs for courses in consultation with faculty; maintain and update lab rubrics and lab procedure files and faculty grading preferences; grading is a primary responsibility.
• Assist faculty members with chemical demonstrations; demonstrate usage of equipment such as pH meter, burette, spectrophotometer, IR and NMR for lab classes; assist faculty with development of new labs by conducting experiments and providing feedback.
• Assist with department seminars including compiling senior seminar attendance forms, prepare, and clean seminar space.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or Biochemistry, other scientific disciplines will be considered.
• Trained in basic laboratory techniques, lab safety, and concepts as relevant to chemistry and biochemistry curriculum.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, staff, and students.
• Good oral, written and communication skills; the ability to take initiative, to be a self-starter, and make decisions as necessary; the ability to form positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds.
• Computer skills including word processing programs, spreadsheets, and online platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with CC Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Block plan.
• 1-2 years related lab experience, such as learning assistant or tutor.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:
$20.03 per hour
