Research Associate
Summary
The position is ideally suited for recent university graduates who would like to prepare themselves for MD or PhD studies after having completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Responsibilities of this position include managing and analyzing large, multimodal datasets, including multi-center medical imaging, de-identified electronic health record data, and clinical trial findings; working both independently and collaborative on data science and visual presentation projects with data analysts, researchers, and faculty; performing comprehensive literature reviews (e.g., PubMed); running large-scale analyses with large language models; managing the submissions and revisions for manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals; and building machine learning and deep learning algorithms for diagnostic endpoints. Previous research assistants have co-authored papers with the research team and regularly interact with faculty at UCSF.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a long-term interest in the field of emergency medicine, pediatrics, and data science. Prior background of research in these fields is useful but not necessary. The candidate must be self-directed and detail-oriented, with preference for those with strong communication skills in written/spoken English.
• BA/BS with a major in a related field, broadly defined (e.g., computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, and/or pre-medical background) and one-year experience (part-time acceptable); or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Ability to meet precise deadlines, follow strict confidentiality guidelines, handle highly sensitive information, and be part of a fast-paced problem-solving team that works with minimum supervision and is extremely motivated
• Superior writing skills
• Strong analytical abilities and quantitative facility, including comfort and experience with intermediate statistics
• Technical proficiency in computational work, including programming (e.g. Python, R), machine learning (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow), and statistical analysis (e.g., logistic regression, descriptive statistics)
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• High integrity and strong work ethic
• Can commit to 18-24 months, starting July 2026
