Aftercare Assistant

The Aftercare Assistant assists with the care and supervision of children who remain for the Afterschool Care Program outside the functions of the Montessori classroom. 

General Duties

The general duties of the Aftercare Assistant include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform services during normal working hours on regularly scheduled school days, and are hourly employees with a schedule determined as needed by the Administration to provide full adult to child ratio coverage. 
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Education and the Aftercare Coordinator and communicates directly with those individuals 
  • Will adhere to the guidelines set by AMI and the School for professional standards for the purpose of maintaining excellence. 

Specific Duties

The specific duties of the Aftercare Assistant shall include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Supervise the children from various classrooms on the playground or other designated aftercare areas. Maintain a 1 to 20 ratio with elementary and adolescent aged children. 
  • Protect the peace and privacy of the children in the aftercare program. 
  • Encourages the children to be independent, providing minimal assistance with projects, as developmentally appropriate. 
  • Using positive discipline techniques, encourages the children to be independent in their interactions with adults and peers as developmentally appropriate. 
  • Support the preparation of and be responsible for the maintenance of a developmentally appropriate aftercare environment. Maintain the order, safety and cleanliness of specified environments. 
  • Carefully observe the children under supervision and report any problems or concerns to the Director of Education and the Aftercare Coordinator. 
  • Share responsibility for the safety and well being of the students. 
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of the hallways, kitchen, library, and bathroom areas.
  • When necessary, interacts with parents in a positive and objective manner. 
  • Sanitize touch points in the hallways and bathrooms upstairs and downstairs. Ensure that the bathroom counters and floors are clean and neat. 
  • Assist children with end of day tasks, such as removing trash from classrooms 
  • Prepare the indoor and outdoor environments for after school activities 
  • Perform daily closing tasks of sweeping, checking doors and organizing aftercare materials/equipment 
  • Abide by the requirements and guidelines outlined in Addendum A.
