Program Assistant

CITY OF WHITEHALL, OHIO 

CLASS SPECIFICATION 

CLASS TITLE: Program Assistant (Parks and Recreation Part Time) FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt 

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation DATE: 02/07/2026 

REPORTS TO: Program and Event Supervisor 

 

JOB SUMMARY AND DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: 

This part-time position provides comprehensive support to the Parks and Recreation department and assists in the day-to-day execution of nature programing, event development, outreach, and administration.  This dynamic position requires the ability to anticipate needs, think critically, and communicate with a high level of confidence and professionalism.  This position reports to the Program and Event Supervisor. 

 

Essential Job Functions are required but not limited to 

Coordinate schedules, meetings, and public engagement opportunities 

Complete a broad variety of administrative tasks, including: assisting with special projects, collecting and preparing information, composing and preparing correspondence, maintaining contact lists, and internal training opportunities 

Work to coordinate outreach activities.  Follow up on contacts made by the department to cultivate ongoing relationships 

Must be comfortable teaching a diverse array of individuals in group settings  

Ability to work with volunteers and seasonal employees and delegate and supervise tasks 

Be able to speak in front of large crowds of people 

Provide event support as requested

Aid and support to City-wide and department events and programs, including set-up and tear down, trash duty, staffing tables or play features, crowd control, and other assigned duties.

Work with Supervisor to develop and lead outdoor education and family programs.

Represent the City and department in outreach activities to develop and strengthen community partnerships.

Assist with marketing and promotions or recreation and events through the website, social media forums, program guide and community meetings.

Other duties as assigned 

**Regular, predictable and punctual attendance is required. 

 

 

Qualifications Required 

HS Diploma or Equivalency 

Thorough knowledge of outdoor education, local wildlife and outdoor skills 

Excellent customer service skills in working with the public including ability to de-escalate tense situations 

Self-starter; ability to work independently 

Availability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays 

Manual labor required.  Move and set-up sports equipment; lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs.   

The employee is subjected to indoor and outdoor environment conditions, extreme heat, direct/extreme sun, high humidity, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. 

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

Knowledge of: 

Standard business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals 

All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job 

Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary 

Local wildlife 

Teaching techniques

Computers, phones, copiers, laptops, tablets, cell phones, security systems, voicemail, fax, calculator, General office equipment 

Specialized personal protective equipment 

Department specific software/applications
