Racial Equity and Justice Education College Internship
Senator Art Haywood, Jaisohn Center, and Esperanza
The New American Initiative Pennsylvania (NAI-PA) internship provides learning opportunities in leadership skills, racial justice, cross-cultural exploration, and career exposure for students of color. The immersive experience is designed to lessen the tensions between youth of different racial and cultural identities, support the mental health concerns of marginalized youth, and provide work experience opportunities in supportive and culturally diverse settings. Interns will work at one of three locations: Senator Art Haywood’s District Office, the Jaisohn Center,or Esperanza. The group will come together for trainings, trips, weekly/biweekly meetings, and other events.
Job Descriptions:
Senator Art Haywood’s office:
● Shadow district office staff in constituent services.
● Support the planning of outreach events as well as attend events throughout the district with the support of Senate staff.
● Research policy and priority platforms of Senator Haywood and work alongside the Policy Director as needed.
● Work on legislative and community initiatives of the office with the Advocacy Team, such as economic dignity programming, ending campus racism, increasing the minimum wage, and more.
● Present on the work and outcomes of their internship at the conclusion of the program.
● Must be able to travel throughout the district.
Jaisohn Center:
● Healthcare related projects will include research, survey, patient contact, medical document scanning, etc.
● Journalism projects will include working on newsletters, annual reports, etc.
● Marketing projects will include working on our website, flyer design, social media post design, etc.
● Other projects will include event planning, grant writing, etc.
Esperanza:
● Support Esperanza staff in ongoing projects, especially those related to environmental initiatives, youth leadership development, and community engagement.
● Work directly with Esperanza youth ambassadors (ages 16-24) on summer projects such as PhotoVoice and community engagement.
● Interns must be prepared to work outside (about two hours at a time) canvassing the neighborhood for community engagement initiatives and caring for Esperanza-managed green spaces.
● One intern at Esperanza will work on cross-departmental administrative projects, supporting land trust, immigration services, and housing department.
● Provide support for community events and meetings.
● Research and write at least one article, with support from Esperanza staff, for Impacto newspaper.
Requirements:
● College Student
● Have a laptop that can be brought to the internship site and be versed in Microsoft software applications, as well as Zoom.
● Ideal candidates will be motivated, have a teamwork orientation, are flexible, adaptable, compassionate, reliable, and responsible.
● Candidate must be able to get to and from their location.
● Be able to work between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility for some weekend and evening hours, if needed, for community events.
Timeframe: This is a 6-week, full-time internship beginning 6/29/2026.
