Workforce Modernization Intern (Undergraduate Students)
This position will be part of a team developing and implementing tools, technologies and process changes that have a direct impact on the more than 2500 operational employees at the MBTA. We are seeking a people-person who enjoys helping others use technology and who is interested in learning about and modernizing the nuts-and-bolts of a transit agency.
As an intern, you will work closely with and receive guidance and mentorship from the MBTA’s Director of Workforce Modernization, Managers of Workforce Modernization, and business and application analysts and other members of the MBTA’s WMP team. You will be using data analysis and continuous improvement principles while you analyze MBTA business processes, identify potential improvements, implement said improvements, and support change management to bring MBTA Operations into the digital age.
The most qualified (or ideal) candidates would be actively enrolled, for entire duration of employment, in the undergraduate / bachelor's degree program of an accredited college / university in Business, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field(s), at least one (1) year of experience in public transit, transportation industry, and / or in business / operations analysis, systems analysis, or related fields. We are looking to hire one (1) intern, who will work at least two (2) days in-office (40 hours per week) for three (3) months.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Work closely and connect with MBTA Operational stakeholders to investigate and document user stories, map and document business processes and use data to identify inefficiencies and flaws within business processes.
- Use critical thinking to identify possible optimizations for MBTA operational business processes with the implementation and/or development of technological tools and solutions.
- With guidance from senior WMP team members, document and translate stakeholder user stories into business requirements and determine the feasibility of your own presented possible optimizations and solutions.
- See through the entire development and implementation of your proposed optimizations/solutions by managing stakeholder and technical team involvement and communications.
- Construct a change management plan, materials, and training and lead your change management initiatives to introduce your optimizations/solutions to your stakeholder(s).
- Develop stakeholder feedback loops to monitor progress of your changes. Use data to understand the effectiveness of your changes and the quantitative impact on MBTA operations.
- Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.

- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Education
- Enrolled, for entire duration of employment, in the undergraduate / bachelor's degree program of an accredited college / university in Business, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field(s).
Minimum Experience and Required Skills
- At least one (1) year professional experience (full-time or part-time) in public transit, transportation industry, and / or in business / operations analysis, systems analysis, or related fields.
- Above average ability to communicate effectively in English, both in written and oral forms.
- Highly organized, motivated, and have great attention-to-detail.
- Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
- Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply). The MBTA does not provide visa sponsorship, such as H1-B status.
