Compensation: $20 per hour
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) is excited to offer an outstanding opportunity for college students to complete an internship with our Division of Remediation in the Oak Ridge Office. Students can expect to gain an understanding of how our agency works to protect human health and the environment by learning about State and Federal environmental remediation regulations, as well as monitoring of various environmental media for impacts of contamination and clean-up in Oak Ridge, TN.
The internship may include a combination of field work and/or office work. Field work may be required and includes walking on unstable terrain, in a variety of climatic conditions; flowing water of varying depths or velocity; and may include encounters with environmental hazards (e.g., poison ivy, heat, biting insects, or snakes).
Highlighted Responsibilities:
- Work directly with our technical team and Subject Matter Experts in the environmental regulatory career field.
- Collect environmental samples (e.g., biological samples, public surveys, in-stream water quality samples).
- Literature and document review to research clean-up efforts on the Oak Ridge Reservation.
- Lab sample processing; data entry, review, and analysis; equipment calibrations.
- Accompany technical staff to regulatory meetings, when possible, to learn about environmental regulatory decision-making.
Qualifications:
- Students earning a degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Physical Science, Ecology, Life Sciences, Geology, or other acceptable science/natural resource related fields.
- Actively enrolled in college and have a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student status as of May 2026.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Have a valid driver’s license.
